A moulding machine for die casting, injection moulding, and other similar processes, comprises a base (2) shaped to support thereon a two-part die (3) and a ram (46) for converging and diverging the die halves between open and closed positions. A pair of clamping frames (5, 6) are privotally mounted on one end of the base, and include a closed border (7) shaped to surround or receive therein side portions of the die halves. The clamping frames are laterally pivoted between a fanned-apart or open position wherein the die can be freely lifted off the base, and a folded or closed position wherein the frame borders surround the die side portions and capture the same between the ends of the frames. In the closed position, retractable compression columns (8) extend between the die and one end of the frames to positively lock the die halves in the closed position, whereby die separation forces developed during injection of the die are resisted substantially solely by the clamping frames. The die halves (120, 121) are mounted for longitudinal movement on rails (14, 15) one only of which has a longitudinal rib (22) which mates with grooves in the die halves to align the die halves with one another while allowing differential lateral thermal expansion of the die halves.

Second actuators are advantageously fluid (hydraulic or pneumatic) operated to supplement force provided by an electrically operated primary actuator when the ejector mechanism is driven to advance ejector members into cavities of a mold assembly. The second actuators may be enabled to be operated during automatically controlled execution of a machine cycle of operation and may be operated in response to operator selections when machine operation is controlled manually.

This invention provides a motor-driven mold clamping mechanism capable of generating a large clamping force even when a motor of a small output is used, and suitably used for, especially, a motorized injection molding machine. Ball nuts (11, 12) engaged with threads (13a, 13b), respectively, which are cut in the opposite directions in ball screws (13) rotated by motors (15), and movable wedges (6) are connected together by links (9,10). in accordance with the rotation of the motors, the links contract or expand to move the wedges forward or backward with a larger force. When the wedges are moved forward, they press and engage fixed wedges (5) formed on a mold base (4) of a mold (3), so that the mold is set firmly on a fixed board (1) or a movable board (2).
