摘要:
A method and apparatus for practicing the method are provided for separating droplets of finely aerosolized elemental mercury from a gaseous stream in which the droplets are dispersed. In the method a gold plated metallic capillary surface is contacted with the gaseous stream, causing the aerosolized droplets to deposit on the capillary surface and by capillary action to coalesce with other of such droplets to form increasingly large drops of mercury. The surface is oriented to allow the mercury to flow by gravitational forces and capillary action to the lowermost portions of the surface, at which it accumulates, and is then collected at a suitable vessel.

A system for decontaminating compressed gas having twin particulate desiccant-containing towers (2) and a two-stage coalescer-containing precoalescer (3) upstream of and connected to the towers by an inlet manifold (5), each tower having a pneumatically actuated inlet valve (4) and a solenoid valve in the inlet manifold and an outlet valve (6) in a common outlet manifold, the towers and precoalescer each having a drain valve (8, 8a) and containing in a lower part an upwardly acting compactor (10) for respectively compacting the desiccant and preventing oil leakage, the towers above a predetermined pressure of gas from the proalescer and under control of the solenoid valves and a timer each alternating between decontaminating and regenerating cycles and together alternating in decontaminating cycles for continuously supplying decontaminated gas to the outlet manifold, and the outlet manifold in turn supplying decontaminated gas as actuating gas to each of said valves and compactors.

A variegated density mist eliminator pad for use in gas-liquid contacting devices for the removal of mists from a mist-containing gas stream which pad comprises a plurality of fibrous elements such as a knitted or woven mesh having open areas for the flow of the gas stream therethrough and characterized by defined adjacent regions of different, i.e. high and low, fiber density with the direction of density variation generally perpendicular to the direction of gas flow, the high density region within the pad permitting enhanced drainage of coalesced liquid, and a method of preparing the high and low density regions through a nesting and non-nesting relationship of fibrous layers.

A fiber bed separator formed of a bed of staple fibers is provided. A discontinuity is created within the bed of fibers at a selected location to improve the drainage of liquids from the fiber bed.
