In the locking device consisting of a locking mechanism (20) and a striker (70), the locking mechanism (20) has a base plate (22), a hook (30), a pole (46), a release lever (52), a drive member (60), a lock spring (56), and a drive spring (66). The hook (30) forms a lock state for clamping the striker or an unlock state by its rotation. The pole (46) is supported rotatably on a supporting shaft (50) as a first shaft and rotates to a position where it can engage with the hook. The release lever (52) is supported rotatably by a supporting shaft (58) as a second shaft and rotates the pole from an engaging permitting position in the non-engaging direction by receiving an unlocking operation force. The drive member (60) is supported rotatably on the supporting shaft (50) and presses the hook in a locked state further in the locking direction. The supporting shaft (58) is set on the side remote from the supporting shaft (50) when viewed from the input point of operating force to the release lever.
