The present invention relates to a dynamic fiber capable of changing in response to external stimuli. The fiber in accordance with the present invention undergoes a radial symmetric change. The fiber in accordance with the present invention may be heat sensitive, moisture sensitive, magnetic field sensitive, electromagnetic field sensitive, etc. Fibers in accordance with the present invention may be incorporated into yarns that may be knitted or woven into textiles/fabrics. Garments or other articles of manufacture may be formed from textiles/fabrics incorporating dynamic fibers, permitting the properties of garments to alter in response to environmental conditions.

In one aspect of the invention, the protective system (1) includes a plurality of metallic staples (2) or wire elements secured to multi-layer matrix (1) including woven fibers, the layers (1a, 1b, 1c) being oriented at cross angles to provide a grid-like pattern of protective elements (2). In one aspect of the invention, protective elements (2) provide a coverage area of less than 90% and as little as 40% of total surface area. In one aspect of the invention, protective elements (2) may be mechanically secured to a matrix (1) by a puncture and crimp process. In another, wire elements may be attached or woven into one or more matrix layers.

A pyramidal geotextile fabric (10) comprising two sets of multi-lobe filament yarns, warp yarns (15W) and fill yarns (15F) interwoven in substantially perpendicular direction to each other, each of the multi-lobe filament yarns having pre-determined, different heat shrinkage characteristics such that, upon heating, the fabric forms a three- dimensional, cuspated profile. A method of stabilizing soil and reinforcing vegetation comprises the steps of placing a three-dimensional, high-profile woven fabric into soil, wherein the fabric comprises two sets of multi-lobe filament yarns interwoven in substantially perpendicular direction to each other, each of the multi-lobe filament yarns having pre-determined, different heat shrinkage characteristics such that, upon heating, the fabric forms a three-dimensional, cuspated profile; securing the fabric to the ground; and, distributing soil and seed onto the fabric such that the section of ground is quickly revegetated and thereby protected from further erosion.

Three reusable surgical/medical fabrics provide improved barrier properties, as reflected by their Suter ratings, and also posses a "hand" similar to a "cotton hand". The Suter ratings are degraded in the order of 10% - 20% after 100 sterile reprocessing cycles. The fabrics are reliable free of pin holes, permitting their use as a single layer barrier panel. The fabrics are woven, respectively, with false twist 100/100 warp yarns and air texturized core and effect 2/60/100 fill yarns; flat trilobal 100/50 warp yarns and air texturized core and effect 2/60/100 fill yarns; and false twist 2/50/34 warp yarns and false twist 150/200 fill yarns. The fabrics are characterized by a minimum porosity of at least 10 x 10⁶ pores/square centimeter and maximum average. and mean pore sizes. The fabrics have a thickness of at least .005 inch, a weight of at least 3.5 ounces per square yard and a filament density of at least 2.0 x 10⁶ filaments per square inch. Filament density is obtained by increasing the number of picks in the greige construction to at least about 160 in the finished fabric. In two of the fabrics, the bulk of the greige construction is increased by "mechanically" working the fabric in a ''jet drying machine.

The first polymer and the second polymer exhibit differential thermal elongation, which causes the multicomponent fibers to bend or curl and reversibly recover in response to changes in temperature, thereby adjusting insulation performance of the textile fabric in response to ambient conditions.

The invention provides a polyester bicomponent staple fiber comprising poly(trimethylene terephthalate) and at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(trimethylene terephthalate), and poly(tetramethylene terephthalate) or a combination of such members, said bicomponent staple fiber having: a) a scalloped oval cross-section shape having an aspect ratio a:b of about 2:1 to about 5:1 wherein 'a' is a fiber cross-section major axis length and 'b' is a fiber cross- section minor axis length; b) a polymer interface substantially perpendicular to the major axis; c) a cross-section configuration selected from the group consisting of side-by- side and eccentric sheath-core; d) a plurality of longitudinal grooves; and e) a groove ratio of about 1.05:1 to about 1.9:1. Additionally, the invention provides a spun yarn comprising cotton and the polyester bicomponent staple fiber of the invention, as well as fabrics and garments comprising the spun yarn of the invention.
