In various aspects, the system includes a displacement-type plunger needle to draw sample fluid from a vial, a cantilevered carousel for rotatably supporting an array of sample holding vials, and a support for supporting the carousel. A treatment system for treating water/wastewater includes two continuously operating granular media filters that are operated together in series. The water/wastewater to be treated is introduced as an influent into the first of the granular media filters and is treated therein. Treated, processed water/wastewater or effluent is produced as is a first reject which contains impurities separated from a granular media bed in the first granular media filter and which is discharged from the first granular media filter. The effluent from the first granular media filter is further filtered in the second continuously operating granular media filter such that the effluent from the second granular media filter is clarified water and a second reject discharged from the second granular media filter contains impurities separated from a granular bed in the second granular media filter. In order to reduce the pollutants in the first and second rejects, the first and second reject water being discharged from respectively the first and second continuously operated granular media filters is separately treated by gravity separation, membrane filtration, two stage or multistage filtration or filtration or any combination thereof so that cleaned water is created that meets quality standards and a sludge is created that can be disinfected and/or dewatered and processed by suitable hygienic measures. In addition, chemicals for coagulation/flocculation may be added and the liquid to be processed may be subjected to a disinfecting treatment and/or a mechanical, biological and/or chemical treatment.

The resultant contaminants-containing wash water is pumped to waste but a sidestream (50) thereof is recycled at least in part to the filter vessel to a location (49) in the vessel between the feed stream inlet port and the dirtied media outlet so that the liquid ordinarily transported with the dirty media at the bottom of the filter is replaced, at least in part with the recycle liquid.

The present invention relates to a device for cleaning a fluid, wherein the device comprises a vessel, a filter bed with granular filter material, such as sand, wherein the filter bed is provided in the vessel; a transport system arranged to agitate filter material of the filter bed during operation; and a sensor system. The sensor system comprises a contact body that comes in contact with the filter material in the filter bed; and a vibration sensor connected to the contact body for sensing vibrations of said contact body. The vibration sensor is arranged for producing a signal which is dependent on the vibrations detected by the sensor. The contact body comprises the wall of the vessel and/or a rod extending into the filter bed. The invention relates further to a method for determining the degree of movement of a filter bed with granular filter material, wherein a contact body is used which comes into contact with the filter material in the filter bed, and wherein the degree of movement of the filter material is determined by sensing the vibrations caused by the movement of the granular filter material of said contact body.
