A gripping surface is provided on an outer surface of a needle shield as incorporated into an intravenous catheter assembly. The gripping surface provides a gripping position nearer the catheter adapter, catheter and needle tip for improved balance and control of the catheter assembly during insertion of the catheter. Additionally, the gripping surfaces include a guard feature to prevent a user's unintended contact with various components of the catheter assembly whereby the contact may result in an undesirable "over the bevel" condition.

A method of retrofitting a probe station having a head plate (12), so that the probe station (10) is adapted to mate with a predetermined probe card dish (16) and any tester (18) out of a set of testers. A depression is then machined into the head plate to create a head plate-tooling plate attachment region. Next, fastening and alignment items are provided and installed in this region. Further, a set of tooling plates (110) are provided, each having fastening and alignment items adapted to mate to the fastening and alignment items on the attachment regions and defining an aperture designed to engage the predetermined probe card dish. The user may then select a desired one of the tooling plates and mate and fasten the selected tooling plate to the head plate-tooling plate attachment region using the alignment and fastening items.

The middle die portion (74) enters between the brackets (14) when the dies (30, 55, 74, 58) are closed to strike and reshape a corresponding middle region (78) of the backing plate (72) between the brackets (14), while the outer die portions (55, 58) strike and reshape corresponding side portions (72, 70) of the mounting plate (16) adjacent either side of the mounting brackets (14).
