The method for coating the seam of a welded tube (20) of this invention includes applying a mixture of the desired protective metal coating in powdered form and a liquid flux over the internal surface of the welded seam with the welded seam located in a lower portion of the tube, then heating the welded seam to the melting temperature of the protective metal coating, melting the metal coating which flows over the seam forming an adherent metallurgical bond. The preferred apparatus includes a wand (86) which extends between the opposed edges (24) of the open seam tube in the welding apparatus and extends axially through the tube to overlie the welded seam spaced from the welding apparatus. The wand includes three conduits transmitting the powdered protective metal coating (88), liquid flux (94), and nonoxidizing gas (38) to the applicator which includes a nozzle (58) which atomizes and sprays the liquid flux over the internal surface of the seam and which combines with the powdered protective metal coating to form a paste. The preferred heating apparatus includes a first induction heater (100) adjacent the seam which preheats the seam and a full body coil (102) which heats the entire tube.

A heat exchanger according to the present invention and an outdoor unit for a refrigeration apparatus including the heat exchanger can suppress the occurrence of a trouble that a main body of the heat exchanger cannot be normally fixed. The heat exchanger (30) includes heat transfer tubes (31 to 34) and a left-side tube sheet (37a). The left-side tube sheet (37a) is bonded to the heat transfer tubes (31 to 34) with a brazing material and is used to fix the heat transfer tubes (31 to 34) to a casing (10) with tube-sheet fixing screws. The left-side tube sheet (37a) includes a left-side bonding surface (41a) to which the brazing material is applied, a left-side rising portion (42a) rising from the left-side bonding surface (41a), and a left-side through-hole (43a) through which the tube-sheet fixing screw is passed. The left-side through-hole (43a) is opened at the left-side rising portion (42a), penetrates the left-side tube sheet (37a), and has an inner peripheral surface to which the brazing material is not applied.

An oil cooler has a core portion (1) formed of stacked core plates (5), a bottom plate (2), a second bottom plate (3) and a top plate (4), and these are brazed in a furnace. The core plate (5) has oil communication ports (13), cooling water communication ports (14) and an oil outlet port (15). The lower end core plate (5) has a boss portion (16) surrounding the cooling water communication port (14) and a boss portion (17) surrounding the oil outlet port (15). Opening portions (32, 33) opposite to the boss portions (16, 17) are formed through the bottom plate (2). Therefore, at the time of the brazing, a melted brazing material is not excessively gathered in the boss portion (16, 17) because the melted brazing material is absorbed in the opening portions (32, 33).

A flat tube brazing method for a laminated heat exchanger, having the steps of laminating a plurality of solder-clad flat tubes (2) via fins (3), inserting both end portions of a flat tube or at least one end portion thereof into a tube insert hole (5) of a header tank (4) and combining them, and unitarily brazing the end portion(s) of the flat tubes and tube insert hole together, characterized in that the width A of the tube insert holes is set greater than that B of the flat tubes, the laminated heat exchanger being placed laterally so that the widthwise axes of the flat tubes extend vertically, and supported by a jig (19) so that a clearance (20) is formed in the portion of the tube insert holes which are below the lower portions of the flat tubes, at the time of the unitary brazing of the combined flat tubes. Owing to this method, the inserting of the flat tubes into the holes at the time of combining thereof is done reliably, and the brazing performance of the tube insert holes and flat tubes can be improved. The brazing of beads is also done reliably, so that a laminated heat exchanger in which the pressure resistance is secured is obtained.
