    摘要： The invention relates to hand tools, particularly garden tools, such as for example garden spades, garden forks and the like. Such tools are known to have a fully forged operative end with an integral socket for connection to a handle. They have high strength but are expensive and require high levels of operator skills in their manufacture. Fabricated constructions from pressings deduce noticeably costs of production but at the expense of strength. The object of the invention is to provide such hand tools that have both acceptable cost factors and acceptable levels of strength. The objective is met by a construction comprising a blade/prong portion (9,22), a separately formed and forged frog (1,13), said separately formed and forged frog (1,13) being suitably secured e.g. by welding, to the blade/prong portion (9,22) and to a separately formed socket (10,21) for connection to a handle.

    摘要： Striking tools, heads and handles for such tools, and methods of manufacturing them. A tool head (22) according to this invention employs a flange (26) which extends from each side of the head between the forward and rear portions of the head. The portion (42) of the head within the periphery of each flange is generally concave and narrows to form a web (44) extending longitudinallg in the striking direction to connect the forward and rear portions. The web (44) may include at least one opening (48) communicating between the two concave surfaces. The flanges increase the cross-sectional area and moment of inertia of the head relative to the striking direction and relative to the handle axis. The resulting head enjoys greater strength and resistance to translational forces, bending moments, deformation and potential failure. Portions of the handle (24) extending through the opening (48) in the head and thereby about portions of the head (22) reduce the possibility that the head will leave the handle as the tool is being swung. A minimum of surfaces required to be machined reduces finishing labor and expense.

    摘要： A process for assembling a hand tool (20, 22) includes the steps of heating an elongated tang element (26, 90) fixed relative to the tool head (24, 38), aligning a front end of a composite tool handle (32) with a rearwardly extending portion of the tang element (26, 90) and driving the heated tang element (26, 90) into the tool handle (32). The tool handle (31) includes a thermoplastic section (50) in proximity to the front end thereof, having an elongate tang receiving channel (54). The heated tang element (26, 90) is driven into the tang receiving channel (54) such that as the tang element (26, 90), engages the tool handle (32), the thermoplastic section (50) surrounding the tang receiving channel (54) is softened and flows into intimate contact around the tang element (26, 90) and then hardens as the heat of the tang element (26, 90) is dissipated to hold the tang element (26, 90) in place. In one preferred form, the tang element (26) forms a portion of the tool head (24), which is heated and then positioned in a stationary jig (82). A tool handle (32) is placed on a track (84) in alignement with a jig and a rear end (34) of the tool handle (32) is engaged to drive the heated tang element (26) into the tang receiving channel (54). In another preferred form, the tang element (90) is secured to a frog (88) for a shovel blade (40). The frog (88) is positioned within a back-side cavity (46) of the shovel blade (40) so that the tang element (90) extends into a shovel blade socket (42). The tool handle (32) is aligned with the tang element (90) by inserting the handle front end into the shovel blade socket (42), prior to driving the tang element (90) into the tang receiving channel (54).
