An apparatus for manufacturing a fastener chain having solid sections by repeating the steps of providing a tape having perforated sections which include holes punched in a longitudinal edge of the tape, and solid sections, which are free of holes, alternating with the perforated sections, supplying the tape so that the perforated section thereof is placed between a stationary mold and movable mold, applying tension to the tape to stretch it, and then injection-molding fastener elements onto the tape at the holes. Stretching of the tape is accomplished by a sprocket wheel provided adjacent a freely rotatable drum. Teeth on the circumferential surface of the sprocket wheel are caused to recede below the circumferential surface of the freely rotatable drum when a solid section of the tape passes over the drum.

A row of slide fastener coupling elements (64) of synthetic resin or meta! is pressed between a pair of first and second presser rolls (18, 24; having first and second confronting presser surfaces (34, 39) engaging legs of the coupling elements (64). The first and second presser surfaces (34, 39) have closest confronting portions spaced from each other by a distance (W) equal to the width of each of the coupling elements (64). The second presser roll (24) is displaceable with respect to the first presser roll (18) to vary the distance (W). The first presser roll (18) has a spur gear (35) held in mesh with a pin gear (41) on the second presser roll (24). The first and second presser rolls (18,24) can be rotated in synchronism by the spur gear (35) and the pin gear (41) even when the second presser roll (24) is displaced relatively to the first presser roll (18). The first and second presser rolls (18, 24) also have partition ridges (47, 48) for meshing engagement with the legs to keep them spaced apart at equal intervals. One of the first and second presser rolls (18, 24) has a third presser surface (50) for engagement with coupling heads (78). In a reinforcing-film applying apparatus for use in production of separable slide fasteners, there are a first working station where a shaping die (50) and a coacting ultrasonic horn (49) are located, and a second working station where a heating die (78) and a coacting heating punch (77) are located, the first and second working stations being spaced apart remotely from one another along a longitudinal path (22) of a slide fastener chain (5). When one of successive pairs of blank tape portions (8) arrives at the first working station, a reinforcing film piece (9) is placed on the fastener chain (5) across the pair of blank tape portions (8), whereupon the shaping die (50) and the ultrasonic horn (48) are moved toward one another to fuse the reinforcing film piece (9) to the pair of blank tape portions (8) only at their inner marginal areas and also to shape such fused marginal portions so as to provide therealong a pair of pin-like members (10, 11) to which a pin and a box of a separable bottom end stop are to be attached. After that, when the pair of blank tape portions (8) with the reinforcing film piece (9) partially fused thereto arrives at the second station as the fastener chain (5) is further moved along the path (22), the heating die (78) and punch (77) are moved toward one another to apply pressure and heat to the pair of blank tape portions (8) and the reinforcing film piece (9) thereon at their superposed areas except the pin-like members (10, 11).
