The platen (10) of the typewriter or the like may be manually rotated using platen knob (118) or may be electronically rotated by energizing a control magnet (110), thus engaging a dog clutch assembly (44, 74; 48, 76) to connect a drive motor (130) to the platen (110). The clutch assembly (44, 74; 48, 76) is such that two separate dog clutches are operable to disconnect the platen (10) and gear train (56, 92, 94. 96, 98, 14) from the overall clutch apparatus and also to disconnect the drive motor belt (32) and other related hardware which is driven by the drive motor (30) and belt (32).

A liquid ink printing machine (10), for forming an image on a recording medium (30) moving along a path, including a jam clearance drive gear disengagement mechanism. The printing machine includes a transport roller (40), to move the medium along the path, a drive gear assembly (58,60,62,64,66,68,70,72) which is coupled to the transport roller, to drive the transport roller and which is disengageable to free the transport roller for movement to provide for removal of the medium in the event of a jam. A stepper motor (52), coupled to the gear assembly, moves the gear assembly for which in turn moves the transport roller for advance of the recording medium along the path. An actuating arm (44) is displaced by the liquid ink printhead carriage (20), in the event of a jam, to disengage the drive gear assembly, thereby freeing the transport roller for unrestricted movement in at least one direction for removal of the recording medium in the event of a jam or inadvertent sheet stoppage. A printer controller (54) moves the gears of the gear assembly to reengage the gears once the jam has been cleared.

The platen roller is rotated by a first platen driving (30) mechanism and is moved toward and away from the thermal head by a second platen driving mechanism. When the platen roller (21) is moved to contact the thermal head (16) via an ink ribbon (94) intervened therebetween, an image is printed on a printing medium (10) fed between the platen roller (21) and the ink ribbon. The printer accomplished aligned overprinting on the printing medium (10) via a paper supply mode, a printing mode, a paper retract mode and a paper discharge mode effected by the first and second platen driving mechanisms.
