A sheet feeding apparatus in a printer is provided with: feeding rollers (112,126) for holding and feeding a sheet of paper therebetween; and an operation lever for changing the contact pressure of the feeding rollers (112) by attaching or detaching the feeding roller to or from the opposite feeding roller (114) depending on a type of sheet, e.g., a continuous form transferred by pin tractors or a manually inserted cut sheet. The operation lever also connects or disconnects a clutch mechanism provided between a drive motor (121) and the pin tractors (148) simultaneously with the attaching/detaching operation for the feeding rollers. A single operation of the operation lever can achieve a precise transfer of a selected type of sheet while suspending another type of sheet in the printer. The sheet feeding apparatus is also provided with a transmission mechanism (132,138) for transmitting a torque between the platen (107) and the feeding rollers by a friction driving force. The transmission mechanism prevents the inertia force of the platen from rotating the feeding rollers uselessly.

A liquid ink printing machine (10), for forming an image on a recording medium (30) moving along a path, including a jam clearance drive gear disengagement mechanism. The printing machine includes a transport roller (40), to move the medium along the path, a drive gear assembly (58,60,62,64,66,68,70,72) which is coupled to the transport roller, to drive the transport roller and which is disengageable to free the transport roller for movement to provide for removal of the medium in the event of a jam. A stepper motor (52), coupled to the gear assembly, moves the gear assembly for which in turn moves the transport roller for advance of the recording medium along the path. An actuating arm (44) is displaced by the liquid ink printhead carriage (20), in the event of a jam, to disengage the drive gear assembly, thereby freeing the transport roller for unrestricted movement in at least one direction for removal of the recording medium in the event of a jam or inadvertent sheet stoppage. A printer controller (54) moves the gears of the gear assembly to reengage the gears once the jam has been cleared.
