摘要:
Methods and devices are described for securely destroying used ribbon from a document personalization machine in order to render any information retained on the used ribbon as unreadable. In one embodiment, the method includes tapering the used ribbon into a used ribbon strand by feeding the used ribbon through a tapering mechanism. The method also includes heating the used ribbon strand to fuse the used ribbon strand into a used ribbon string thereby rendering any data retained on the used ribbon unreadable.

The invention provides a neutralization apparatus which simplifies an apparatus composition, lowers an apparatus cost and removes electrical charge effectively from a ribbon-like substance which is charged by stripping, and provides a printer (10) having the neutralization apparatus. The neutralization apparatus neutralizes an ink ribbon (12). The neutralization apparatus has a conductive roller (34) which is arranged so as to contact the surface of the ink ribbon (14) and a neutralization brush (32) which counters the back of the ink ribbon (14). A balance of the electrical charge of the surface and the electrical charge of the back of the ink ribbon (14) is broken by electrical discharge caused by the conductive roller (34). And thereby, the charged voltage of the electrical charge of the back of the ink ribbon becomes large and the neutralization brush remove the electrical charge charged to the back of the ink ribbon (14) effectively.

An authentication method for authenticating an article (Fig. 2a, 202, 204, 208, 210) in a device includes the steps of a) reading an identification number stored on the article, b) reading an authentication number stored on the article, c) determining an input number based at least in part on the identification number, d) applying an authentication function to the input number to calculate an output number, e) determining that the article is authentic only if the authentication number corresponds to the output number, and f) permitting use of the article in the device if the article is authentic, and disabling use of the article in the device if the article is not authentic.

摘要:
ribbon system for a printer of the kind having a moveable printhead carrier establishes a ribbon cartridge loading position for the carrier at one end of the carrier travel axis. In response to an operator initiation, the printhead carrier is driven to the loading position where a ribbon cartridge (30) is operator mounted at a fixture (70) adjacent the printhead (20). Cartridge (30) includes a path defining section (34) that extends to arrange a loop of ribbon (36) around the distal side of printhead (20). Section (34) is detachable to travel with the printhead carrier and includes ribbon guides (80) for defining a ribbon path around printhead (20) during printing. Detachable section (34) is held to a bulk ribbon supply section (32) of cartridge (30) by a catch (76) which is automatically released by mounting cartridge (30).

A printing device with n print heads (A, B, C, D, etc) which move together and are arranged equidistantly with a separation (d) between their centres which print on an inked printing ribbon (X) which advances when the heads (A, B, C, D, etc) are stopped and which stops when the print heads (A, B, C, D, etc) print on the same and where the printing ribbon X is divided into S sectors of I length. The printing by the heads (A, B, C, D, etc) is accompanied by the displacement of the ribbon for a d +I distance to optimise the operation times while using all the sectors S of the ribbon X in the printing process.

A printer device (9), and method, is disclosed which is used in conjunction with an ink ribbon assembly (10). The ink ribbon assembly (10) includes an ink ribbon (12) and a support. A storage device (22) is integrated with the support. Data relating to the ink ribbon characteristics is stored in the storage device (22). The printer reads the data in the storage device (22) and modifies the supplied print information ascending to the data stored in the ink ribbon assembly (10). Ink ribbon characteristics data can include production variance, ribbon type, and remaining ribbon data.

A printer (10) and method adapted to precisely position a dye receiver portion (30). The printer and method properly positions the dye receiver portion for printing successive images (50) onto the dye receiver portion with precise color registration and constant length "L", as the dye receiver portion unwinds from a roll (40) of dye receiver. The printer comprises a print head (60) for successively printing the images on the dye receiver and includes a rotator (45) engaging the dye receiver roll for rotating the dye receiver roll by a plurality of incremental steps, so that the dye receiver is unwound from the dye receiver roll. The printer also includes a computer (250) connected to the dye receiver roll for computing the incremental steps by which to rotate the dye receiver roll. The computer computes the incremental steps as a function of change of diameter of the dye receiver roll as each image of constant predetermined length is successively printed.
