The bottom plate mechanism has an adaptor plate (10) on which bottom plates of one or more moulds are mounted. The adaptor plate contains passages (14, 20) which connect an inlet (16) thereof to a source of vacuum through a filter (72). In order that the filter may be rapidly changed, the adapter plate is supported by a vertically-extending tubular member (24) which is supported for height adjustment, with a cylindrical projection (12) of the adaptor plate telescopically received within the tubular member. The arrangement is such that the adaptor plate (10) may be lifted away from the tubular member (24) so that the cylindrical projection (12) and filter (72), which is mounted on the cylindrical projection, leave the tubular member.

The invention relates to a method, comprising: feeding at least one molten-glass parison into a parison mold; forming, in the parison mold, a blank of the item (30) from said at least one parison; transferring the blank of the item into a finishing mold; and forming the item (30) in the finishing mold. While forming the item (30) in the finishing mold, excess glass is directed out of the base (32) of the item (30) so as to form a convex bulge (33), and said bulge (33) is removed such that the thickness of the base (32) of the article (30) is substantially constant.

The mould with an internal shaping core for manufacturing thin-walled blown glass objects, for example Christmas tree decorations, consists of at least two semi-moulds with a free mould division axes, matched and connected disjointly with an opening for inserting the stay for blowing the air inside the mould. The shaping core fastened inside the mould is stabilised in at least one seat or lock through full closure of both semi-moulds. In the thus shaped spatial cavity a heated glass bulb is blown up which is given a final, monolithic complex shape.
