Thermotropic liquid crystalline polyester compositions containing recurring units derived from 2-methylhydroquinone, terephthalic acid, 2,6-naphthalenecarboxylic acid, and hydroquinone, characterized as having a heat distortion temperature of greater than 200°C and improved elongation. The inclusion of a reinforcing/filling agent selected from the group consisting of glass reinforcing agents, glass fillers, carbon metasilicate, calcium carbonate, talc, titanium dioxide, and calcined aluminum silicate in said compositions, and also in those same compositions lacking recurring units of hydroquinone, results in an improvement in the elongation of said compositions. The inclusion of carbon fiber into these compositions results in no significant decrease in the elongation of said compositions. The compositions are useful as films, fibers, and shaped articles.

The present invention provides carboxy-terminated oligomeric polyester compositions useful in the preparation of 'weatherable' polymeric materials, for example weatherable copolyestercarbonates. In one aspect the present invention provides an oligomeric polyester composition comprising structural units derived from at least one diacid, at least one diaryl carbonate and at least one diol. The structural units derived from the diacid are present in a molar excess of from about 10% to about 40% based on a ratio of moles of diacid-derived structural units to moles of diol-derived structural units present in the oligomeric polyester composition. The oligomeric polyester composition is further characterized by the presence of atleast some phenoxy end groups.

Disclosed herein are polyarylate acid chloride compositions derived from aromatic diacid chlorides and dihydroxy aromatic compounds that are made by reacting a stoichiometric excess of said aromatic diacid chlorides with the dihydroxy aromatic compounds. Disclosed also are a wide variety of compositions derived from said polyarylate acid chlorides. In one instance new compositions are prepared by reacting the polyarylate acid chlorides with a nucleophile containing carboxylate functionality to provide an acid end-capped polyarylate. Alternately, the polyarylate acid chlorides may be hydrolyzed to provide carboxylate end-capped polyarylates. Disclosed further are methods to make described compositions.
