A method for concentrating the amount of alkylated mono-aromatics in a lubricating oil feedstock useful as a feedstock for sulfonation. The method comprises extracting a feedstock rich in aromatics with a solvent selected from NMP, phenol and furfural, said feedstock containing sufficient water to provide a raffinate having a target VI between about 86 and 97 under extraction conditions of treat and temperature selected to achieve the target VI. The raffinate is then hydrofined and solvent dewaxed.

A process for solvent dewaxing petroleum feedstock to separate crystallized wax from lubricant oil by filtration of a wax/oil/solvent mixture. A waxy oil is fed through line (1) and is mixed with solvent fed through line (2) from a solvent recovery section. The wax/oil/solvent mixture is fed to heat exchanger (3) and heated to ensure that all wax crystals are dissolved in true solution. This warm mixture is then fed through line (4) to heat exchanger (5) in which it is cooled.

A process is disclosed for the solvent dewaxing of wax--containing hydrocarbon oils, preferably waxy petroleum oils most preferably waxy lubricating or transformer oils. The process employs methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) as the dewaxing solvent, either alone or in combination with other dewaxing solvents such as ketones, halogenated hydrocarbon anti-solvents, and mixtures thereof. The use of MTBE as a dewaxing solvent, or in combination with conventional dewaxing anti-solvents permits lower volumes of solvent to be employed in the dewaxing process while simultaneously producing an oil of lower wax content and lower dewaxed oil pour point at the same filter temperature as that commonly employed using conventional dewaxing solvents. Dewaxed oil yields for equivalent pour point are 3 to 4% higher with the MTBE dewaxing process than with prior dewaxing processes.

A process for producing paraffin extracted clarified slurry oil (raffinate) with improved aromaticity from the feed stock such as clarified slurry oil (CSO) is provided. The obtained paraffin extracted clarified slurry oil with improved aromaticity is suitable for a variety of industrial applications. For example, it can be used as a valuable feedstock for producing carbon black.
