A substantially iron-free copper nitrate solution is made by dissolving a copper-containing solid catalyst composition such as a used copper-zinc oxide-alumina methanol synthesis catalyst in nitric acid and controlling the acid concentration at a level such that any iron oxide present in the composition remains substantially undissolved. The acid concentration during dissolution is preferably under 6 molar. Alternatively or additionally the tefminal pH is greater than 1.0. The resulting solution is pure enough for reconversion to catalyst by co-precipitation.

Metal values are extracted from aqueous solutions of metal salts containing halide or pseudo halide ions by pyrimidine, pyrazine or pyridazine derivitives bearing the substituent-(C=O.X) n where X is the group-OR, or-NR 2 R 3 and n ist 1, 2 or 3. R, is a hydrocarbyl group containing from 1 to 36 carbon atoms and R 2 and R 2 together contain from 1 to 36 carbon atoms. The molecule as a whole contains from 5 to 36 alkyl carbon atoms and may carry further optional substituents. The process is especially useful for the recovery of metals from leach solutions derived from sulphur-containg ores.

A process is described for recovering non-ferrous metal values from a metal-containing sulphide material containing at least one non-ferrous metal selected from zinc, copper, lead, cobalt, nickel, silver and gold, as well as iron, comprising leaching the complex sulphide material under oxidising conditions in a leach stage with an acidic aqueous chloride lixiviant solution containing magnesium chloride, thereby to solubilise non-ferrous metal values in the material and to leave a residue comprising iron in oxide or hydrated oxide form and also sulphur, passing resulting non-ferrous metal-containing leach liquor to a metal recovery section including a solvent extraction stage in which non-ferrous metal values are recovered by liquid-liquid extraction using a hydrophobic organic extractant phase containing a cationic transport agent for non-ferrous metal transport, recovering from the solvent extraction stage an aqueous magnesium chloride-containing raffinate, subjecting a portion of the aqueous magnesium chloride-containing raffinate from the solvent extraction stage to high temperature hydrolysis, thereby liberating hydrogen chloride and magnesium oxide, recycling another portion of the aqueous magnesium chloride containing raffinate to the leach stage, recycling liberated hydrogen chloride to the leach stage, and passing magnesium oxide formed in the high temperature hydrolysis to the solvent extraction stage for use as neutralising agent for the cationic transport agent.

A process for the hydrometallurgical recovery of metal value, particularly copper, from copper-containing sulphide materials in which the material is conventionally ground and reacted with a solution containing less than 3 moles per litre of chloride ion, and optionally as little as 15 g/litre, together with sulphate ions with continuous oxygen injection and vigerous agitation. The reacting may be carried out at a pH in the range of 0.5 - 4, at moderate pressure as low as atmospheric pressure and at a moderate temperature below the boiling point of the solution such as 85°C.

Procede de recuperation du cuivre, de molybdene, d'or et de soufre elementaire dans les queues provenant du traitement hydrometallurgique des minerais de sulfure de cuivre, en particulier la copyrite. Les queues sont habituellement jetees, et donc la recuperation d'elements precieux s'y trouvant rend les procedes hydrometallurgiques de la fig. 1, non polluants pour l'environnement, economiquement viables. Les queues sont concentrees en petites quantites en vrac par flottation pour rejeter la gangue et le procede (Fig. 2) se poursuit par l'extraction du soufre a partir du residu concentre solide, de preference par volatilisation ou lixiviation avec un solvant du soufre, et par la recuperation du soufre elementaire; lixiviation du residu avec du chlorure ferrique pour dissoudre selectivement le cuivre et le fer: recuperation du cuivre a partir du liquide, ou renvoi de celui-ci dans le circuit hydrometallurgique; lixiviation du residu a partir du produit de lixiviation au chlorure ferrique avec du cyanure pour solubiliser selectivement l'or, recuperation de l'or du liquide, recuperation du minerai de molybdene du residu provenant du produit de lixiviation au cyanure par flottation, et recuperation du molybdene a partir du minerai de molybdene.

Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von sulfidischen Kupferkonzentraten aus komplex zusammengesetzten sulfidischen Konzentraten, die neben Kupfer, Eisen und gegebenenfalls Edelmetallen mindestens eins der Nich-Eisen-Metalle Zink, Blei, Nickel und Kobalt als Hauptbestandteil enthalten, bei dem die komplex zusammengesetzten sulfidischen Konzentrate einer kupferhaitigen, vorwiegend chloridischen Lösung zugemischt werden, und die so erhaltene Suspension bei erhöhter Temperatur unter erhöhtem Druck und bei einem pH-Wert unter 3 behandelt wird.
