The invention relates to a ring spinning machine (1) whose spindles are driven by means of a tangential belt (3) that is driven by several motors along the run thereof. In order to be able to optimally adjust the driving motors of the tangential belt to the different power requirements of spindles and the specific transmission power of a tangential belt (3), the mutual distance between the motors driving the tangential belt or the number of spindles driven by one motor is selected in a variable manner, which has the advantage that uniform motors can be used whose number depends on the total power required.

To propose a belt drive which can be extended to any length, which reduces the transmission of vibrations along the belt and thus reducing the slippage of the long belts on the output rollers as well as which allows a simplified exchange of the drive belt and a more cost-efficient operation of the belt drive, the transmission unit (1) of the belt drive (12) comprises an input belt wheel (5) to be driven by a first drive belt (2) and an output belt wheel (6) for driving a second drive belt (3), wherein a transmission belt (7) indirectly interacting with both belt wheels (5, 6) is arranged in the transmission unit (1) so that both belt wheels (5, 6) turn in the same direction and have a transmission ratio of 1 : 1.
