Cellulose nanofilaments from cellulose fibers, a method and a device to produce them are disclosed. The nanofilaments are fine filaments with widths in the sub-micron range and lengths up to a couple of millimeters. These nanofilaments are made from natural fibers from wood and other plants. The surface of the nanofilaments can be modified to carry anionic, cationic, polar, hydrophobic or other functional groups. Addition of these nanofilaments to papermaking furnishes substantially improves the wet-web strength and dry sheet strength much better than existing natural and synthetic polymers. The cellulose nanofilaments produced by the present invention are excellent additives for reinforcement of paper and paperboard products and composite materials, and can be used to produce superabsorbent materials.

The content of ray cells in cellulose pulp causes problems and therefore these ray cells should be removed from the cellulose pulp to improve the pulp quality. The present invention makes this possible and comprises a method wherein at first an advancing pulp suspension is screened or vortex cleaned, (3) leading to the formation of an accept pulp fraction (4) and a reject pulp fraction (5) and that the reject pulp fraction is cleaned and divided, and that accepted material (pulp fibres and valuable fine material) is brought to further treatment and/or use. The invention is characterized in that the cleaning and division of the reject pulp suspension is carried out so that substantially all ray cells are present in the apex fraction of a fractionating cyclone (6) (if that is the kind of device used) and in that said fraction as such constitutes a very limited material stream, or in that a very limited material stream, predominantly containing ray cells is selected from the apex fraction, and in that this very limited material stream is brought to a disposal stage.

The invention relates to a method for controlling a multi-step screening apparatus (1), the method comprising controlling other accept, reject and dilution flows in relation to the flow measured in the accept channel (7a) of the first screening step (3a). Thus a simpler control unit (9) can be used and accept of higher quality can be obtained than before. The invention further relates to an apparatus for controlling a multi-step screening apparatus (1), said apparatus comprising a control unit (9) arranged to measure the flows of all accept, reject and dilution water channels (7a-7c, 5a, 5b, 11a, 11b) and to adjust the flow of the other channels on the basis of the flow of the accept channel of the first step.

A method and apparatus for the removal of light material from a fiber supension particularly suitable for removing light compressible plastic material such as expanded polystyrene and similar material from the short circulation of a paper machine. The plastic particles-containing fiber suspension is divided in a degassing tank (7) into reject and accept flows by the assistance of vacuum. The light reject containing flow is separated from the main flow by an overflow device and recirculated to the wire pit (1) or corresponding device. A separation device (20) such as a vibrating screen, vibrating drum, curved screen or inverted cyclone is provided within the light reject flow return duct (15) for removing the detrimental plastic or other light material from the short circulation and for preventing the accumulation thereof in the wire pit.
