The present invention aims to provide techniques for preparing matte coated printing papers having high opacity and brightness as well as improved brightness variation at low basis weight with good runnability. According to the present invention, a process for preparing a matte coated printing paper having a basis weight of 60 to 90 g/m 2 , a brightness of 75% or more, and an opacity of 95% or more is provided, comprising applying a coating solution containing calcium carbonate by curtain coating on a base paper having a brightness of 45 to 70% made from a raw material pulp containing a total of 50% or more of deinked pulp and/or mechanical pulp.

The invention relates to safety paper provided with an authentication for authenticating the paper. In the safety paper according to the invention, the base paper is provided with a structural deviation comprising at least one or some of the following: one or more perforations holes thinner/thicker spots/areas thinner/sparser spots or areas, or colouring agent layers applied onto the base paper. Furthermore, the structural deviation is covered with a coating material layer. The coating material layer covers at least one side of the base paper substantially entirely in such a way that the overall thickness of the paper is primarily constant over the whole area of the paper. However, the coating material of layer has a different thickness at the structural deviations with respect to the other areas of the paper. The invention also relates to a method for manufacturing the safety paper according to the invention.

The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing paper. A base paper having a first side and a second side is treated, on at least the first side, to a roughness level of Bendtsen roughness from 30 to 500 ml/min. After this, the first side of the base paper is provided with a barrier layer by a contactless method so that the water vapour permeability of the paper is not greater than 10 g/m2/24h.
