The invention relates to a film application mechanism for applying a pasty or fluid coating medium to a running fibrous material web, particularly a paper or cardboard web, with a roller pair forming a first nip through which the fibrous material web is guided. At least one of the rollers of the roller pair is an application roller, by which the coating medium provided in the form of a film on the application roller can be transferred in the first nip from the application roller to one side of the fibrous material web coming into contact therewith. An application device and a doctor blade element are associated with the application roller in such a manner that the coating material is first applied in excess to the application roller upstream of the first nip by means of the application device and then removed in part in a second nip by means of the doctor blade element, which together with the application roller, forms the second nip in order to form the film. The invention is characterized in that a plurality of pressure sensors, by means of which the pressure profile in the direction transverse to the machine direction in the first and second nips can be determined, are embedded in the elastic covering of the application roller.

The fluid application apparatus may include a slot die applicator and a substrate carrier. The substrate carrier may include one or more pattern elements and may be adapted to advance the substrate past the slot die applicator as the slot die applicator discharges adhesive onto the substrate. In operation, the substrate is disposed on the substrate carrier; the substrate carrier advances the substrate past the slot opening of the slot die applicator. In turn, the substrate is intermittently compressed between the slot die applicator and the pattern surface of the pattern element. As the substrate is intermittently compressed, adhesive discharged from the slot die applicator is applied onto the substrate in an area having a shape substantially the same as a shape defined by the pattern surface.

Dabei wird ausgegangen von dem Prinzip des indirekten Streichfarbenauftrags, bei welchem die Streichfarbe zunächst auf die Mantelfläche einer Auftragswalze aufgegeben und sodann an eine Faserstoffbahn abgegeben wird. Der Grundgedanke der Erfindung besteht darin, zwei oder mehrere Lagen von Streichfarbe auf die Mantelfläche ein- und derselben Auftragswalze aufzugeben. Gemäß einer abgewandelten Ausführungsform kann vor dem Aufbringen einer Streichfarbenschicht auch eine Release-Flüssigkeit aufgebracht werden, die die Streichfarbe abstößt, aber eine Affinität zum Material der Mantelfläche der Auftragswalze hat, so daß ein problemloses Ablösen der beschichteten Faserstoffbahn von der Mantelfläche der Walze erfolgt.

The invention concerns an applicator beam in a size press comprising a nip (N) formed by press rolls (12, 14), through which nip the paper or board web (W) is passed. The press rolls (12,14) are provided with coating devices (23) for the spreading of films of coating agent onto the faces of said rolls. The coating devices (23) are mounted on applicator beams (20) placed in the transverse direction of the machine, which applicator beams are linked pivotally on the frame (11) of the size press or on the loading arms (16) of the displaceable roll (14) by means of a pivot shaft (21) transverse to the machine direction and which applicator beams are provided with pivot cylinders (22), by whose means the applicator beams (20) can be pivoted between a closed position, i.e. the operating position, and an opened position, i.e. the service position. According to the invention, in its cross section taken in a vertical plane in the longitudinal direction of the machine, the applicator beam (20) is shaped so that at least the wall (26) of the applicator beam (20) that is facing away from the corresponding press roll (14) is curved. Moreover, the pivot shaft (21) of the applicator beam (20) is arranged so that, when the applicator beam (20) is pivoted around its pivot shaft (21), the distance (a) from the curved outer face (26) of the applicator beam to the other constructions of the machine placed close to the applicator beam (20), such as the tending bridge (30), remains substantially unchanged.
