A mining machine, in the form of a ranging drum shearer has a ranging arm 11 pivotally mounted on at least one end of the body 10, of the shearer. The arm 11 carries a cutter drum and an associated transversely mounted electric motor 12 which drives the cutter drum of said arm. The electric motor is contained withln a transversely disposed cylindrical shroud 20 mounted on or integral with the ranging arm 11 and spaced longitudinally of the axis of rotation 14 of the ranging arm 11. The machine runs in both directions on a track 16 which has a conveyor 16A which runs in one direction. Therefore, when the machine is running in the direction opposite to that of the conveyor a coal sizer 18 and an associated transversely mounted electric motor 19 are spaced in advance of the leading end face of the body. The coal sizer 18 is carried by a mounting 23 which is pivotally connected to the body 10 on the ranging arm hinge 14 and has a two-part sleeve 24A, 24B which locates around the shroud 20 and is rotatable relative to the shroud. When the ranging arm 11 pivots up or down, the shroud also pivots but the coal sizer 18 is restrained to remain in a pre-set stationary position so that it can break large lumps of cut coal to a size which enables the lumps to pass along the conveyor 16A under the machine body 10. The coal sizer 18 is restrained from pivoting with the shroud by a position-control arm 30 which is pivotal on the machine body and extends longitudinally alongside the coal sizer. The control arm 30 can be pivoted by a hydraulic ram 33 to locate it in the pre-set position. The arm 30 has a keyway 31 into which locates a key 32 coaxial with the coal sizer. The key 32 pivots and slides along the keyway as the ranging arm pivots and the sleeve 24 rotates about the shroud 20 so that a distance 'L' between the axis of the coal sizer and the shroud remains constant. When the control arm 30 is pivoted to its lowermost position, the drum drive motor 12 can be removed, unobstructed, from the shroud 20.
