A double tube modular coil steam generator is provided in which a multiplicity of inner tubes conducting water are individually surrounded by outer tubes containing liquid metal as a heat transfer agent. The double tubes form into coils, providing a large surface area while conserving space. Immersion of the double tube coil in hot liquid metal, e.g., from the core of a nuclear reactor, causes efficient transfer of heat across the liquid metal in the outer tube to the water in the inner tube, creating superheated steam, which can be cycled to a turbine and converted to electrical power. The efficiency, realiability and safety of the multiple double tube design of the steam generator obviates the necessity of many secondary heat removal and emergency components in addition to conserving space and material. The modular design allows ease of operation, fabrication and repair.

The invention relates to a fireproof wall, comprising a boiler wall (1) and a protective cladding (2) positioned in front thereof made of a plurality of fireproof plates (21, 22). The fireproof wall has a rear-ventilated wall section, in the region of which an intermediate space (3) is present between the boiler wall (1) and the protective cladding (2). Gas supply means for supplying a protective gas to the intermediate space (3) comprise a gas distribution channel (K) and at least one gas supply line (52) for supplying protective gas to the gas distribution channel. The gas distribution channel (K) is arranged at the lower end of the rear-ventilated wall section, and below the gas distribution channel (K), there is no rear-ventilated wall section. The gas distribution channel (K) is arranged on the same side as the protective cladding (2) with respect to the boiler wall (1), and extends transversely across the protective cladding (2). The gas distribution channel (K) is communicatively connected to the intermediate space (3), continuously over the length of the gas distribution channel, or at several discrete points communicatively with the intermediate space (3), between the part of the protective cladding (2) located above the same and the boiler wall (1).

An expansion seal assembly for sealingly connecting first (18) and second (20) conduits which experience relative thermal expansion and contraction due to the flow of hot material through the conduits. The conduits each comprise a plurality of hollow tubes (16) integral therewith, a portion (22d) of the second conduit telescopically overlapping a portion of the first conduit in a spaced relationship to permit the relative axial and lateral movements of the conduits. A fluid circulatory system is provided for passing a heat transfer fluid through the tubes to remove heat from the material passing within the conduits. First (28) and second (30) corrugated plates extend outwardly from the first and second conduits, respectively and are sealed with a composite fabric belt (36) dimensioned to permit the relative movements. Alternatively, a first plate (56) extends outwardly from the second conduit and the second plate (58) is rigidly secured to and extends between the first conduit and the first plate having corrugations to permit the relative movements. Finally,, thermal insulation (38,42,44) is disposed between the plates exterior to the conduits to inhibit heat flow.
