A method of operating a fuel system (100) is provided. The method includes removing fuel from at least a portion of the fuel system using a gravity drain process. The method also includes channeling nitrogen into at least a portion of the fuel system to facilitate removing air and residual fuel from at least a portion of the fuel system, thereby mitigating a formation of carbonaceous precipitate particulates. The method further includes removing air and nitrogen from at least a portion of the fuel system during a fuel refilling process using a venting process such that at least a portion of the fuel system is substantially refilled with fuel and substantially evacuated of air and nitrogen. The method also includes removing air from at least a portion of the refilled fuel system using a venting process. The method further includes recirculating fuel within at least a portion of the fuel system, thereby removing heat from at least a portion of the fuel system and facilitating a transfer of operating fuel modes.

A self-purging fuel injector for a combustor of a gas turbine engine is disclosed wherein the fuel injector comprises an injector body (10) having one or more, preferably two, air discharge orifices (122c) for discharging air to the combustor and first (130) and second (150) fuel passage means having respective first (132c) and second (162c) fuel discharge orifices for discharging fuel to the combustor. The first and second fuel passages are in communication upstream of the fuel discharge orifices. If the supply of fuel to the first and second fuel discharge orifices is interrupted, a pneumatic pressure is applied at the first fuel discharge orifice and a different pneumatic pressure is applied at the second fuel discharge orifice such that the fuel residing in the fuel passages between the first and second fuel discharge orifices is subjected to a pressure differential effective to purge the resident fuel into the combustor.

A circular body (54), having a throughgoing orifice (56), an externally threaded periphery (60), and a pair of stepped recesses (62,64), defines a valve seat for a reciprocating piston (78,80). A retaining ring (72) is made fast in one of the recesses (64), and a seal (74) which contracts upon cooling to the ambient, after having been exposed to elevated temperatures, is set in the other recess (62). The seal (74) is formed of a composite of plastic in which are dispersed carbon fibers to render the seal resistant to creep. A housing (70) having a pair of chambers formed therein has the orificed body and piston interposed between the chambers for valvingly controlling inter-chamber communication.
