The method comprises the steps of producing a main foodstuff product (4) in the foodstuff production process (2); receiving the residual product continuously from the foodstuff production process; supplying the residual product to a mixer (30); supplying the mixed product (31) to a fluidized bed (40); supplying heated air (57) of between 60-150 degrees C to the fluidized bed; drying the mixed product in the fluidized bed using the supplied heated air; cooling the dried product; and extracting the dried product (42) from the fluidized bed, wherein a portion (62) of the dried product is supplied to the mixer to be mixed with received residual product (12).

In one aspect, the apparatus comprises a means for providing a flow of heated fluid, and a means for managing the thermal state of the flow of heated fluid. The means for managing the thermal state of the flow of heated fluid is arranged operable with the means for providing a flow of heated fluid so that exposure of the sample to the flow of heated fluid facilitates a reduction of the moisture content of a portion of the sample while substantially preserving one or more chemical and/or physical properties of the portion.

A system is provided for removing surface moisture from granulated coal or other materials in particulate form, the system comprising a dryer, wherein the dryer has: an in-feed for material particles; an in-feed for entrainment gas(es), to provide dilute phase gas entrainment of the particles; and turbulence-inducing means configured to subject the flow of gas-entrained particles to turbulence, wherein the turbulence-inducing means comprises a supply of dry gas(es) in use and that delivers the dry gas(es) so as to impinge on/ intersect with the gas-entrained particle flow whereby inducing turbulence to strip water from the surface of the entrained particles, wherein the dryer comprises a stator body (11) having the form of a tubular main duct through which the gas-entrained particles flow in use, wherein the turbulence-inducing means comprises at least one port in the stator body (11) that delivers high velocity compressed/ pressurised dry turbulence-inducing gas(es) substantially directly radially inwardly and substantially orthogonally into the main duct to intersect with the gas-entrained particle flow.
