An encoder without a stopping structure comprises a rotating shaft (1), an axis sleeve (2), a stopping base (4), a positioning elastic trip (5), a spacer (6), a partition plate (7), at least one movable arm (8), at least one electric brush (9) and at least one main body (11), and they are sequentially arranged from bottom to top. There is not any stopping structure on the rotating shaft (1) and the stopping base (4). The rotating shaft (1) can be rotated 360 degrees or more. The electric brush (9) has a plastic covered part (91), a bent part (92), an elastic arm (93) and a brush head (94) forming an integrated structure. The plastic covered part (91) is covered in a movable arm (8). The bent part (92) connects the plastic covered part (91) and the elastic arm (93) and bends the elastic arm (93) toward the plastic covered part (91). The elastic arm (93) comprises a main arm (931) with long strip ring body and a branch arm (932). Said brush head (94) is pressed at the free ends of the main arm (931) and the branch arm (932). The number of channels of the encoder increases to 32 or more, so that the programming and operating control can be conveniently realized. The electric brush is connected steadily with the circuit plate of the encoding circuit because of the electric brush without any loose situations.

Signal generating apparatus comprises a linear series of Hall-effect switches (44) arranged as a plurality of linear arrays in discrete probes (46a, 46b...46n) which are butted end to end. Each switch is closed when in proximity of an actuating magnet (40) movable along the series of switches. In each array a resistance chain (66) is linked at intervals to the switches. Movement of the magnet along an array thereby gives a progressively changing voltage on an output line (50) from the resistance chain as a cumulative signal indicating the position of the magnet. When the magnet moves from one array to the succeeding array after generating a maximum cumulative signal from said one array, that signal is maintained by a latch connection (56) between the two arrays. A cumulative signal representing the magnet position relative to the complete series of switches can thus be generated. The arrays are powered in parallel so that it is possible to extend substantially the total number of switches or indicating points in the apparatus.

An encoder device encodes angular position in the form of electrical signals in dependence on the position of a rotatable member in relation to a series of discrete fixed contacts disposed about the axis of rotation of a rotatable member. A series of discrete fixed contacts 2a,2b, carried by a panel 1 form a first group of contacts of a flexible switch structure which also has a second group of contacts 9 carried by a flexible sheet 7 and arranged such that each contact of said second group is located opposite but spaced from one of the series forming said first group of contacts. An intermediate sheet 8 is sandwiched between the panel 1 and flexible sheet 7 and is apertured at 10 in the region of the contact sets 2a,2b and 9. The rotatable member carries a switch actuating means 14 which operates to close any of the oppositely disposed first and second contact sets, in dependence upon its angular position, said switching actuating means being such that either one contact set is closed or two adjacent contact sets are closed for any angular position of said rotatable member. The output is derived from terminal areas 6 on the panel 1.
