A temperature sensor for a cold reference junction of a thermocouple is provided that may be incorporated permanently or removeably in a releasable connector having a first connector part arranged to engage releasably with a second connector part in which the thermocouple conductors terminate, so forming a cold reference junction for the thermocouple. When the two parts of the connector are engaged, the temperature sensor of the present invention is able to sense the temperature in the vicinity of a cold reference junction in the connector. The temperature sensor may be provided by embedding one or more thermistors into a flexible disk or plate-like seal able to fit around the conductors of the first connector part such that the thermistors make electrical contact with selected conductors of the first connector part and thermal contact with the cold reference junction.

A measuring apparatus for determining a measurement temperature at a measurement point using a first thermal element is described. The measuring apparatus comprises a first connection terminal and a second connection terminal for connecting the first thermal element, a first connecting line and a second connecting line that connect the first and second connection terminals to respective evaluation electronics, a reference temperature sensor that is arranged outside the connection terminals and is designed to sense a reference temperature at the location of the reference temperature sensor, and the evaluation electronics, which are designed to determine the measurement temperature at the measurement point. In the second connection terminal, the second connecting line has an additional connecting line connected to it that consists of a different material from the second connecting line. The additional connecting line forms, together with the second connecting line, a second thermal element that is likewise connected to the evaluation electronics. The second thermal element delivers a second measurement voltage that is dependent on the second temperature difference between the temperature of the second connection terminal and the reference temperature at the location of the reference temperature sensor. The evaluation electronics are designed to take a first measurement voltage delivered by the first thermal element, the second measurement voltage delivered by the second thermal element and the reference temperature sensed by the reference temperature sensor as a basis for determining the measurement temperature at the measurement point.

A transmitter (10) generates an output signal, which represents temperature, based on potential across thermocouple leads (L1, L2) from a main thermocouple (12). A housing has first and second terminals (20, 22) extending through a wall (18) which separates first and second cavities (14, 16) in the housing. The terminals (20, 22) are connected to the thermocouple leads (L1, L2) in the first cavity to form terminal cold junctions (J2, J3). A converter (24) has converter leads (L3, L4) which are connected to the terminals (20, 22) in the second cavity. The converter (24) senses a combined signal which represents main thermocouple potential and terminal cold junction potential. The converter (24) also provides the output signal. A conductor (C1) has a first end coupled to the first terminal (22) and a second end coupled to the converter forming a correction thermocouple (J4, J5). The correction thermocouple (J4, J5) provides a first correction signal representing a difference between a terminal temperature and a converter temperature. A sensor (26) on the converter (24) provides a converter temperature signal which represents the converter temperature. The converter (24) provides the output signal as a function of the converter temperature signal, the first correction signal and the combined signal.

Es sind Verfahren und Schaltungsanordnungen bekannt zur Messung der Temperatur einer Meßstelle mittels eines Thermoelementes mit mindestens zwei in einem Punkt thermisch vereinigten Thermoschenkeln, deren Anschlüsse sich auf einer von der Meßstelle unterschiedlichen Vergleichsstellentemperatur befinden, wobei die zwischen den Anschlüssen anliegende Thermospannung in digitale elektrische Signale umgewandelt und einem Rechner zugeführt wird, in dem die zugeführte Thermospannung des Thermoelementes unter Berücksichtigung der Vergleichsstellentemperatur korrigiert und danach einer Anzeige und/oder Meßwertausgabe zugeführt wird. Um ein Verfahren und eine Schaltungsordnung bereitzustellen, welche mit möglichst geringem apperativem Aufwand einen genauen Wert für die mit dem Thermoelement zu messende Temperatur liefern, ist die Vergleichsstelle des Thermoelementes thermisch gekoppelt mit einem die Temperatur der Anschlüsse an der Vergleichsstelle des Thermoelementes erfassenden temperatursensitiven piezoelektrischen Schwingelement, das die Frequenz eines Oszillators bestimmt und mit dem Rechner verbunden ist, dem ein dieser Temperatur entsprechendes digitales elektrisches Signal zugeführt wird.
