A method is proposed for the determination of the pressure in a combustion chamber (8) of a large diesel engine having at least one cylinder (2) in which a piston (3) delimiting the combustion chamber (8) can be moved back and forth and which is connected by means of a piston rod (4) to a crosshead (5) being movable in a crosshead guide which in turn is connected to a crankshaft (7) by means of a connecting rod (6). The acceleration of the crosshead (5) is measured by means of a sensor device (9) and said acceleration is used for the determination of the pressure in the combustion chamber (8). The invention relates to a method for evaluating the march of pressure in the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine, wherein the output signal of at least one cylinder pressure sensor and a crankshaft angle sensor is evaluated. Pressure march characteristics for specific valve control times are obtained by analysing the march of pressure in the combustion chamber via the crankshaft angle. Said characteristics enable the following valve control times to be deduced in relation to the crankshaft angle: 'outlet opens', 'outlet closes', 'inlet opens', 'inlet closes'.

The invention relates to a method for estimating the level of ethanol in a fuel injected into an internal combustion engine over a number (n) of cycles (n being an integer greater than or equal to 1). The method comprises the following steps: determination of the start of combustion of an injected fuel for each of the cycles; calculation of the average combustion start angle 'ϑave start' from the combustion start angles (ϑ) recorded for all of the n cycles; determination of the end of combustion of an injected fuel for each of the cycles; calculation of the average combustion end angle 'ϑave end' from the combustion end angles (ϑ) recorded for all of the n cycles; calculation of the combustion time between the combustion start time on the basis of 'ϑave start' and the combustion end time on the basis of 'ϑave end'; and deduction of the level of ethanol from the combustion time on the basis of a pre-determined model or a list of combustion times and associated ethanol levels.
