There is disclosed herein a computer-implemented method for determining characteristics of a power grid. The method comprises determining a signal filter for extracting a sample signal (102S) from a power grid signal (102G), the signal filter being configured to filter frequencies outside of a filter bandwidth (FB) from the power grid signal. The method further comprises generating a probe signal for injecting into the power grid to investigate a component (102C) of the power grid signal at a frequency of interest (f0), the probe signal having an injection frequency (fS) different to the frequency of interest. The injection frequency is spaced from the frequency of interest such that the sample signal is resolvable, using the determined signal filter, from the component of the power grid signal, and the sample signal responds to the probe signal according to the one or more characteristics of the power grid at the frequency of interest. The method then further comprises injecting the probe signal into the power grid, extracting the sample signal from the power grid signal using the signal filter, and determining the one or more characteristics of the power grid at the frequency of interest based on the sample signal.

The invention concerns a system for extraction and analysis of significant radioelectric signals. It includes an overall number N of tracks. Each track Vi includes a receptor connected to a digital acquisition device of analog signals generating a digital signal SNi. Each track Vi includes a bank of polyphased filters, one or more digital signals SEi being generated by the bank of polyphased filters of the digital SNi signal emitted by the digital acquisition device of analog signals. The extracted digital signals SEi each have a frequency bandwidth less than that of the signal SNi received by the digital acquisition device of the analog signals. The system includes at least one device for the distribution of extracted digital signals adapted to receive extracted digital signals SEi of the banks of polyphased filters to one or more processing and storage unit/s. The processing and storage units are adapted to the analysis, characterisation and storage of the digital signals received. In particular, the invention is applicable to radio-surveillance systems using radioelectric emissions, whether in realtime or delayed action.

A channelizing receiver is provided with a plurality of channel receivers for monitoring respective segments of a frequency band being monitored by the channelizing receiver. Each channel receiver includes a channel processor for detecting an electromagnetic signal, measuring the peak amplitude of the electromagnetic signal and comparing this peak amplitude with the peak amplitudes for the electromagnetic signal detected by adjacent channel receivers. Data responsive to a detected signal is transmitted from a channel receiver only if the channel receiver's measured peak amplitude is higher than that for the adjacent channel receivers. The data include an estimate of the frequency and bandwidth of the detected signal made by the channel receiver transmitting the data based upon an assessment of the relative peak amplitudes.

A spectrum analyzer comprises a plurality of filters each provided with a low-pass output and a high-pass output both having the same cutoff frequency which is different in the case of the different filters. Switching means are provided for periodically connecting pairs of filters in cascade during a first time interval between one input for signals to be analyzed and a filtered-signal transmission channel assigned to each pair of filters. One of the filters of each pair has a high-pass (or respectively low-pass) output connected to the input of the other filter whose utilization output is the low-pass (or respectively high-pass) output. The switching means also have the function of periodically establishing a cascade connection during a second time interval between pairs of filters which are different from the first pairs. In the case of one filter, the output utilized during the second time interval is different from the output utilized during the first time interval.

A signal to be analysed is fed from input terminal 1 to analog-digital converter 6. The resulting digital signal is fed in parallel to digital low- (or high-) pass filters 16 to 22. The outputs of filters 16 to 22 are fed to square circuits 23-1 to 23-7. Subtraction circuits 24-1 to 24-6 receive the outputs of respective pairs of square circuits (e.g. subtraction circuit 24-1 receives the outputs of square circuits 23-1, 23-2, and subtraction circuit 24-2 receives the outputs of square circuits 23-2, 23-3). The subtraction circuits 24-1 to 24-6 derive differences between the outputs of the pairs of square circuits to which they are connected. The differences are fed to accumulators 25-1 to 25-6 which accumulate received differences over a period of time then output accumulated values. The output accuulated values give indications of power levels in different frequency bands of the signal to be analyzed over the period of time concerned.
