A variable focus optical system is particularly suitable for use in acquiring digital images for subsequent processing in a hand held, omnidirectional symbology or bar code reader (12) by which linear and two dimensional (matrix, maxi-code) bar codes (28; 34; 40; 52; 54) may be imaged over relatively long working distances. The imaging system includes a focusing objective taking lens (92) and a two-dimensional photodetector (93) that operate to form an image of an object such as a bar code in X and Y directions simultaneously and generates an electrical signal representative of the object or code for subsequent downstream processing. Focusing is achieved via a rotating disk (94) that carries a plurality of optical shims (130) or other light controlling surfaces to provide for different focus zones. A through-the-lens (TTL) targeting system is provided to visually assist the user in positioning the system for a variety of objects to assure that an object will be captured within the field of view and be sharply imaged on the photodetector (93) when the lens (92) is focused. Two different forms of artificial illumination are provided to accommodate nearby objects that may be either specular or partially diffuse and more distant objects where the reflection characteristics have less impact on image contrast. Ranging through the lens (92) using elements of the photodetector (93) is included to provide information to set the focus of the objective lens (92) in one of many possible focusing zones.

An afocal optical module simulator (aoms) (14) for use in conjunction with one or two other optical modules (12 and 16) to simulate an afocal variator optical system. The aoms (14) is comprised of an optical module having a front and a rear end, and includes a movable negative lens (24). The front end of the aoms (14) includes a mechanism for securing a front optical module (12) which may include as its rearmost element a positive lens system (42) which will be located juxtaposed to, but spaced from, the movable negative lens (24) within the aoms (14). Dual-pupil, dual spectral band wide field-of-view re-imaged refractive optical imaging systems. In one example an optical imaging system includes a dual-band front objective lens group configured to receive electromagnetic radiation over the field-of-view of the optical imaging system, to form a first pupil, and to direct the electromagnetic radiation through the first pupil, the electromagnetic radiation including first and second non-overlapping spectral bands, and the field-of-view spanning at least 45°×45°, and a re-imaging refractive optical sub-system configured to receive the electromagnetic radiation via the first pupil, to form at least one intermediate image plane, and to focus the electromagnetic radiation via at least one second pupil onto at least one final image plane to form a first image from the first spectral band and a second image from the second spectral band. A beam deflector can be positioned proximate the first pupil to expand the field of view.

The invention relates to improving optical properties of optical instruments with variable magnification, such as zoom binoculars, reducing the weight thereof, and enabling the user to change magnifications quickly. The invention provides an optical instrument with a focal length-varying lens 4 disposed on the optical axis between an objective lens 7 and an eyepiece 3, further having an adjusting lens 5 for adjusting optical properties when the focal length-varying lens is in an area to provide high magnification. The adjusting lens is supported so that it is capable of moving between a location on the optical axis and a location off the path of light beams. Interlocked with a magnification-varying mechanism that controls the position of the focal length-varying lens, the adjusting lens is moved to the on-the-axis location when the focal length-varying lens is in an area to provide high magnification, and to the off-the-axis location when low magnification.
