An optical receiver unit (100R) includes a photodetector array (150) to receive the modulated visible light from the multicore fibre optic cable (50); and a controller (140) to receive the output of the photodetectors (152); decode data from the received output, and provide the decoded data to a receiving computer system (C). An optical transceiver unit (100) includes the optical transmitter (100T) and optical receiver (100R).
