A camera producing colour video outputs may employ an image intensifier 5 and a monochrome CCD sensor 3. The scene is exposed through filters F 3 , F 4 which may each contain stripes of subtractive primary colours alternating with clear regions. The video is decoded using waveforms derived from a memory which records the output of the sensor when imaged on, for example, primary colours such as red and blue, producing trains of pulses which identify the spatial regions of each line corresponding to the spatial areas of the pattem on the sensor produced by the colour filters F 3 , F 4 , in order that actual scenes can be decoded using the stored waveforms, for example using sample and hold devices. A colour interference signal is generated in matrix addition circuitry 10 to produce a luminance signal which has stripe visibility removed from it, permitting high resolution video signals to be obtained.

In a single-tube color image pickup apparatus, an optical image is passed through a color stripe filter having recurrent groups of different color stripes to a photoelectrical conversion target, which is scanned by an electron beam to generate a video signal comprising a carrier having a frequency inversely proportional to the intervals at which the recurrent groups of filter strips are arranged. The carrier is modulated in phase with the stripes of each group and in amplitude with the intensity of the optical image. Prior to operation, the target is uniformly illuminated with light of a predetermined color to generate the carrier, which is stored into a field memory. During operation the memory is repeatedly addressed to generate a reference signal. The frequency of the reference signal is converted so that the video signal and the frequency-converted reference signal have a frequency ratio of 1:2 and an opposite phase relationship therebetween. A color demodulator receives these signals to derive a pair of color component signals for coupling to a matrix circuit to which a luminance component is also applied.

An image is captured into a video signal comprised of individual pixels by means of an array sensor with color stripes. When processing the signal from the sensor, the system first interprets the highest frequencies of the signal as an upper sideband of the I color component in such a way that doubles the recoverable bandwidth of color detail. From the upper sideband of the signal, the corresponding lower color sideband is predicted and its effect is then subtracted from the luminance component, from which, in turn, an image is generated. The resulting image thereby produced is thus enhanced in sharpness while at the same time exhibiting a reduction in artifacts. Preferably color is demodulated from such a striped array sensor signal wherein the step is included of demodulating the predominant I color vector from the color carrier utilizing an asymmetric sideband filter.
