The first flow chamber directs the liquid stream downwards in a first direction at a first velocity, the second flow chamber directs the liquid carrier upwards in a second direction opposite the first direction, and the separation chamber is disposed between the first flow chamber and the second flow chamber. The separation chamber includes a redirection portion that has inclined plates across which the liquid carrier flows and, as the liquid slows from a first velocity to a second velocity, the solid particles fall out of the liquid carrier and collect in the collection portion of the separation chamber.

The separating disk is manufactured of a material. The separating disk comprises a number of distance members (25) extending at a certain height away from at least one of the inner surface and the outer surface. The tapering shape of the separating disk has been provided through pressing of a blank of the material against a tool having a shape corresponding to the tapering shape of the pressed separating disk. The separating disk has a thickness which varies with the distance from the axis of rotation. The height of the distance members (25) varies with the distance from the axis (x) of rotation in such a way that this varying height compensates for the varying thickness.

An enhanced gravity separation device rotates a plurality of rectangular section vessels about a central drive shaft. Each vessel has an array of closely spaced plates positioned with the vessel between outer regions and inner regions. A feed of mixed dense and less dense fluid matter is fed to the outer regions via a pipe and conduits, through the plate arrays and into the inner regions. Overflow of less dense matter reports to the inner regions and underflow of denser matter reports to the outer region. The vessels may be fluidized by liquid supplied into the outer regions via annulus and conduits.
