The present invention relates to an apparatus (1) for the cleaning of crankcase gas from an internal combustion engine. The apparatus (1) has a housing (2) and a separation chamber (3) for the crankcase gas with a centrifugal rotor (4) which is arranged for the cleaning of the crankcase gas in the separation chamber (3). The centrifugal rotor (4) comprises a drive shaft (10) extending into a drive chamber (16) of the apparatus, wherein a turbine (17) is connected to the drive shaft (10). A nozzle (18) is arranged to receive pressurized liquid from the combustion engine and to direct the pressurized liquid in a jet (J) from a nozzle opening (19) against the turbine (17) for rotation of the centrifugal rotor (4). An adapter element (14) is configured such that the apparatus (1) is mountable onto the combustion engine with a drive liquid passage (22) in communication with the nozzle (18). The nozzle (18) is integrally formed with the adapter element (14) with a nozzle passage having a conical shape (25) which converges in the flow direction towards the nozzle opening (19).

A space between the rotor body and a stationary casing which surrounds the rotor body is supplied with foam or with an aerosol of a liquid in a gas, when unbalance or vibrations over a certain level have occurred. The rotor body is retarded by the friction, which is obtained between the rotor body, the foam or aerosol and the casing.In an arrangement to lower the rotary speed of a rotating rotor body in a centrifugal separator the lowering is initiated when a disturbing unbalance or disturbing vibrations has occurred. Means are arranged at a certain unbalance or certain vibration level to activate a foam generating device or a device that creates an aerosol for the purpose of filling a space between the rotor body and a casing which surrounds the same with foam or aerosol.

Fluid is communicated to and from the fluid processing chamber (16) through a flexible umbilicus (24). The fluid processing chamber (16) spins while the centrifuge pulls the umbilicus (24) around an axis of centrifugation. The centrifuge engages the umbilicus (24) through a thrust bearing received in a gimbal assembly (78) carried on a rotating wing plate (72). The gimbal assembly (78) allows the umbilicus (24) to pivot relative to the wing plate (72) under the forces developed during centrifugation. The gimbal assembly (78) includes a bearing retainer adapted to securely retain umbilicus thrust bearings of differing sizes and a gimbal retains the bearing retainer loosely but securely.
