The present invention refers to a method for verifying operative parameters of a selecting device (22) of a machine (100) for forming springs, configured for subdividing the springs formed by a spring forming device (1) of said spring forming machine (100) in at least one first group corresponding to springs having dimensional parameters falling into predefined tolerance values, and a second group corresponding to springs having dimensional parameters varying from said predefined tolerance values, said method comprising: - setting the spring forming device (1) so that it makes a test run of springs comprising a predetermined number (n) of faulty springs having dimensional parameters varying from said predefined tolerance values, and a predetermined number of suitable springs having dimensional parameters falling into said predefined tolerance values; - detecting the dimensional parameters of each spring formed in the forming device (1) by a measuring system (17) of the machine (100); - subdividing, by said selecting device (22), the springs formed by the forming device (1) into said at least one first and one second groups; - verifying the absence of suitable springs among the springs selected by the selecting device (22) in the second group; - comparing the number of the faulty springs selected by the selecting device (22) in the second group with said predetermined number (n) of faulty springs set for the test run. Multilayered canted coil springs and methods that improve mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of canted coil springs. In some embodiments, properties of dissimilar materials are combined into the spring using various material layers. For example, in one embodiment a protective or high strength outer layer material shields a more sensitive inner core material from harsh environments and conditions. The inner core material may be a highly electrically conductive material, with the outer layer material having an electrical conductivity lower than the core. In various embodiments the following characteristics of the spring are improved: electrical and/or thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, temperature resistance, stress relaxation, variable frictional force, and wear resistance in harsh environments and conditions.

A method of manufacturing a coil spring and a coil spring manufacturing apparatus (1) are provided that enable precise forming of a coil spring even when various kinds of wire rods are used as a wire rod (M). This is based on the premise that the wire material (M) being fed out is serially pressed against a rotating roller outer circumferential surface (5a) to form the wire rod (M) into a coil shape. Under this premise, as the wire rod (M) is fed out, a rotating roller (5) is rotationally driven by a rotary drive force of a servomotor (20) such that a portion pressed against the wire rod (M) on the rotating roller outer circumferential surface (5a) moves toward the advancing side of the wire rod (M).

By giving an appropriate compressive residual stress to a wire material, a compression coil spring having high durability can be provided even using an inexpensive wire material. The present invention provides a compression coil spring formed by using a steel wire material, the steel wire material consisting of C: 0.45 to 0.85 mass%, Si: 0.15 to 2.5 mass%, Mn: 0.3 to 1.0 mass%, Fe and inevitable impurities as a remainder, and a circle-equivalent diameter of 1.5 to 9.0 mm, wherein hardness of a freely selected cross-section of the wire material is 570 to 700 HV, and at an inner diameter side of the coil spring, unloaded compressive residual stress at a depth of 0.2 mm from a surface in an approximate maximal main stress direction in a case in which compressive load is loaded on the spring is 200 MPa or more, and unloaded compressive residual stress at a depth of 0.4 mm from surface is 100 MPa or more.
