Provided is a wastewater treatment process capable of selectively and efficiently separating and removing a manganese precipitate with high purity from sulfuric acid-acidic wastewater containing aluminum, magnesium, and manganese. In the wastewater treatment for a sulfuric acid-acidic wastewater containing aluminum, magnesium, and manganese, a magnesium oxide is used for part or all of the neutralizing agent to be added, the magnesium oxide is produced through the following steps (1) to (4): (1) effluent wastewater obtained by separating aluminum and manganese from sulfuric acid-acidic wastewater is concentrated, and calcium contained in the effluent wastewater is precipitated as a calcium sulfate; (2) the solution obtained in (1) is further concentrated, and magnesium is precipitated and separated as a magnesium sulfate; (3) the magnesium sulfate separated in (2) is roasted together with a reducing agent to obtain a magnesium oxide and sulfurous acid gas; and (4) the magnesium oxide obtained in (3) is washed.

A continuous countercurrent flow process for converting FGD gypsum to ammonium sulfate and calcium carbonate including countercurrent flows with internal recycle of liquids to maximize the purity of reaction products while minimizing reaction times, and further include embodiments of the process that provide a yield of both ammonium sulfate and calcium carbonate to be 97 to 100%, and embodiments that provide for processes having a total time of reaction being 8 to 12 minutes, the invention further including processes for removing contaminants from the FGD gypsum employing an acid rinse process and/or a slurry tank reactor process.

The present invention relates to the use of solvents and low frequency sonic energy within the range of 1.5 to 6.5 KHz, preferably less than 2.0 KHz and most preferably 1.25 KHz, for enhancing the dissolution of alkaline earth metal scales from well bores using a scale-removing solvent comprising an aqueous alkaline solution having a pH of 8 to 14 and containing EDTA or DTPA and a catalyst or synergist, preferably an oxalate anion. When the scale deposit is contacted with the scale removing solvent while simultaneously transmitting low frequency sonic energy through the solvent, substantially more scale is dissolved at a faster rate than previously possible.

The cooled pregnant leach solution (19) is cooled in a cooling device (13) to obtain a further cooled pregnant leach solution (12). Gypsum is precipitated from the further cooled pregnant leach solution (12) to obtain the gypsum-depleted pregnant leach solution (11).
