Provided is an image display apparatus in which color breakup of a reflection image formed from reflected ambient light may be reduced to suppress the influence of an ambient environment. The image display apparatus includes multiple pixels. Each of the pixels includes a light-emitting layer and a structure layer having a refractive index distribution in an in-plane direction parallel to a screen of the image display apparatus, for extracting light generated from the light-emitting layer. The structure layer includes multiple structures formed of a first medium and a layer formed of a second medium having a refractive index different from a refractive index of the first medium. The multiple structures are non-periodically arranged in the layer. Reflected ambient light is reflected by the multiple structures formed of the first medium to have an overlap range to reduce color breakup of a reflection image formed from the reflected ambient light.

Openings are created in a structure by a process in which a plate is furnished with a sacrificial patterned masking layer divided into multiple laterally separated mask portions. A primary layer of actinic material is provided over the masking layer and in space between the mask portions. Material of the primary layer not shadowed by a mask formed with the mask portions is backside exposed to actinic radiation. Material of the primary layer not exposed to the radiation is removed. Segments of the masking layer not covered by exposed material of the primary layer are then removed. Consequently, openings extend through the primary layer where the segments of the masking layer have been removed. The process is typically employed in forming an optical device such as a flat-panel cathode-ray tube display in which the openings in the primary layer receive light-emissive material.

A forming apparatus having a film pull-out mechanism (22) which pulls out, from a winding body of a transfer film in which a predetermined layer is formed on a base film, the transfer film from its end portion, a film transport mechanism (1, 4, 23, 7) which transports the pulled out transfer film to a downstream side, a transfer mechanism (6, 17, 18) which transfers the predetermined layer onto a plate mounted on a movable mounting table (14), by pressing and heating the transfer film, a film take-up mechanism (8) which takes up the transfer film while peeling off the base film from the transfer film, a moving mechanism (10, 11, 12, 13) formed on the same enclosure (BD) as the transfer mechanism, for moving the mounting table, a pressing mechanism (9, 24) formed on the enclosure (BD), for pressing the plate on the mounting table, and a control portion (52) which controls each operation to transfer the predetermined layer onto the plate and press the plate, in response to an operation instruction from an external source. With a single unit of such a forming apparatus, transfer and pressing are automatically performed.
