A high volume air, gas or fluid flow powered torus electric generator includes a hollow torus shaped housing 10, an insulated copper coil winding 13, an entrance point 11 and an exit point 12 for the flow, a sphere shaped permanent magnet 14 and the terminals of the copper coil windings 16, 17. Thus, flow can be used to produce electricity just by forcing the magnetic sphere to revolve inside the hollow torus shaped housing and thus through the coil. This generator can convert kinetic energy from the flow into electric energy and vice versa in a simple and not much demanding way.

A flow characteristic regulating electromagnetic flow coupler (10) is disclosed as comprising a pump duct (36) and a generator duct (38) for connection in separate flow circuits containing electrically conductive fluid. Circuit means (26) electrically connect the separate fluid in each of the pump and generator ducts (36, 38) for conducting electric current through the fluid in each of the pump and generator ducts (36, 38) transversely of the fluid flow therethrough. Means are provided for applying respectively first and second magnetic fields (42, 40) through the fluids of the generator and pump ducts (38, 36) transversely of the current and fluid flow therethrough, whereby the fluid driven through the generator duct (38) forces the fluid to flow through the pump duct (36). Means are provided for setting the magnetic flux density of the first and second magnetic fields (42, 40) in the generator and pump ducts (38, 36) at different levels B1 and 82 respectively, whereby the flow characteristic of the forced fluid in the pump duct (36) is greater than that flow characteristic of the drive fluid in the generator duct (38).

The present invention generally provides a micropump (100) that utilizes electro-osmotic pumping of fluid in one channel or region (106) to generate a pressure based flow of material in a connected channel (104), where the connected channel (104) has substantially no electro-osmotic flow generated. Such pumps have a variety of applications, and are particularly useful in those situations where the application for which the pump is to be used prohibits the application of electric fields to the channel in which fluid flow is desired, or where pressure based flow is particularly desirable.
