The invention relates to an input circuit for an FM/AM radio receiver with an FM intermediate frequency trap circuit (3) and an AM image frequency trap circuit (5) comprising an FM input circuit for receiving frequency-modulated input signals and an AM input circuit for receiving amplitude-modulated input signals in the output of a circuit for remote FM selection on the antenna output. In order to better decouple the FM input circuit from the AM input circuit, an AM image frequency trap circuit (5) is connected behind the FM intermediate frequency trap circuit (3) and PIN diodes (D1, D2) are provided between the FM intermediate frequency trap circuit (3) and the AM image frequency trap circuit (5) for switching from AM to FM mode wherein said PIN diodes (D1, D2) connect the FM intermediate frequency trap circuit (3) for high frequency signals to the ground when the FM mode is selected. In the AM mode, a control voltage is applied on the switching device between the FM intermediate frequency trap circuit (3) and the AM image frequency trap circuit (5) for automatic gain control (AGC).

A signal receiver which is capable of receiving and demodulating a satellite broadcasting signal which is an FM signal and a terrestrial broadcasting signal which is an AM signal is disclosed. FM and AM signals are frequency-converted into signals having frequencies in a same intermediate frequency band by making common use of a radio frequency amplifier, a mixer, a local oscillator and an intermediate frequency filter. At the time of reception of an FM signal, the FM signal is demodulated in a phase-locked loop circuit, and a local oscillator is subjected to frequency modulation by a part of the demodulated signal, thereby constituting an FM negative feedback loop, and thus narrowing the occupied bandwidth of the FM signal. At the time of reception of an AM signal, the phase-locked loop circuit is used to regenerate a carrier, and the output signal of the phase-locked loop circuit is input to a multiplier to effect synchronous detection of the input signal. At this time, the FM negative feedback to the local oscillator is utilized to effect automatic frequency control, thereby achieving stabilization of the synchronous detection.

The AM-FM detector circuit is of integrated circuit format and comprises as an input stage, a differentially connected emitter follower pair (24, 26) which functions: in FM-mode to pass the more dominant one of two incoming FM-IF signals which are phase-displaced on a continuously variable basis about a 90 phase displacement at the FM-IF carrier frequency, and in AM-mode to operate as a full wave rectifier on two incoming, 180 phase displaced, AM signals. Onward of the input stage there is an FM-channel which includes a zero-crossing detector (33), and an AM-channel which includes a linear differential amplifier (37), and finally an ouput amplifier (41) which delivers, in either FM or AM mode, the recovered audio, and either an FM-AFC or AM-AGC signal. The detector circuit incorporates significant improvements, designed to insure temperature stability, compensation for variations in the IC fabricating process, over-all stability and especially dc-stability, and to provide, in AM-mode improved AGC performance and minimized audio distortion.
