PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flux composition for treating the metal surface of long steel products, including wires, flat plates, coils, bars, reinforcements, pipes, strip steels and steel sheets, before immersion in a zinc molten bath, in molten zinc plating or molten zinc coating.SOLUTION: A flux composition comprises (a) 40-70 wt.% of zinc chloride, (b) 10-30 wt.% of ammonium chloride, (c) 6-30 wt.% of a combination of at least two alkali metal chlorides including sodium chloride and potassium chloride, (d) 2 wt.% or lower of lead chloride and (e) 15 wt.% or lower of tin chloride, in a KCl/NaCl wt. ratio in the combination of alkali metal chlorides of 2.0-8.0. The flux composition can provide a protective coating layer of a thickness of 5-30 μm. The combined content of lead chloride and tin chloride is at least 2.5 wt.%.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flux composition capable of applying a continuous, more uniform, more smooth and void-free coating to an optionally-shaped metal article, especially an iron material or a steel material, by hot-dip galvanization using a Zn-Al alloy and a Zn-Al-Mg alloy having various compositions.SOLUTION: As a flux composition for treating a metal surface before batch-type hot-dip galvanization for a molten zinc-based alloy, a flux composition is used, which contains 2-15 wt.% or less tin chloride, 40-70 wt.% zinc chloride, 10-30 wt.% ammonium chloride, 6-30 wt.% alkali metal halide or alkaline earth metal halide, and 0.1-2 wt.% lead chloride, and the total amount of lead chloride and tin chloride is at least 2.5 wt.% of the composition. A protective coating layer having the thickness of 5-30 μm can be obtained from flux liquid containing the flux composition dissolved in water.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a uniform, smooth and void-free galvanized coating continuously on a lengthy steel product, in a single hot-dip galvanization step utilizing a zinc-aluminium alloy or a zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy.SOLUTION: A flux composition containing a specific flux composition, (a) 40-70 wt.% zinc chloride, (b) 10-30 wt.% ammonium chloride and (c) a 6-30 wt.% group of at least two alkali metal chlorides or alkaline earth metal chlorides is allowed to contain a prescribed amount of lead chloride and tin chloride.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an economically and technically improved process or step, for zinc plating of long steel products, including e.g. wires, bars, rods, rails and pipes.SOLUTION: After one or more treating steps selected from alkaline washing, rinsing, acid cleaning and drying, a long steel product is treated with a flux composition containing a combination of at least two alkali metal chlorides including KCl and NaCl. The treatment of Zn-Al with the flux composition enables continuous formation of a uniform, smooth and void-free zinc plating coating by a single molten zinc plating step using a Zn-Al-Mg alloy. The flux composition contains 40-70 wt.% of ZnCl, 10-30 wt.% of NHCl and 6-30 wt.% of at least two alkali metal chlorides and has a wt. ratio of potassium chloride to sodium chloride, or KCl/NaCl wt. ratio, in the flux composition of 2.0 or higher.
