    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active knee bolster which is miniaturized and capable of returning a knee protective device from the constraint position to the storage position. SOLUTION: An actuator 32 of the active knee bolster 24 comprises an inner cylinder 48 with a lower limb constraint unit 30 supported by a rear end 48A, an outer cylinder 46 which is fixed to an instrument panel reinforcement 33 of a vehicle body to movably support the inner cylinder 48 inside, a motor 59 which is provided in the inner cylinder 48, and fixed to a front end 46B of the outer cylinder 46 to move the inner cylinder 48 between the constraint position and the storage position, and a planetary gear 70 which is installed in the inner cylinder 48, and connected to the motor 59 to move the inner cylinder 48.     Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the constraining performance for the lower limbs of a passenger by a lower limb constraining means for various kinds of sitting postures of the passenger who sits on a passenger seat. SOLUTION: The lower limb constraining section 30 of an active knee bolster 24 is constituted of an area of an instrument panel 18 facing the passenger seat 20 (specified region), and the width of the lower limb constraining section 30 is made larger than the width of the passenger seat 20. Also, a glove box 34 is arranged in the lower limb constraining section 30 of the instrument panel facing the passenger seat 20. When a motor 62 which constitutes the actuator 32 of the active knee bolster 24 operates, a sector gear 46 rotates on a sector shaft 50 through a gear box 64, and the lower limb constraining section 30 of the instrument panel 18 rotates on a shaft 40 and moves to a lower limb constraining position.
