PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the convenience of handling of an electronic certificate utilized when generating ciphered mail. SOLUTION: As indicated in Figure 1, the gateway apparatus 4 is connected to a client terminal 1 and includes a function of transmitting and receiving e-mail. The gateway apparatus 4 includes a certificate storage part 8 for storing the electronic certificates. Then, whether or not there is an existing electronic certificate whose mail address matches with that of a newly received electronic certificate in the stored electronic certificates is checked. When the existing electronic certificate is present, either one of the new electronic certificate and the existing electronic certificate is selected and only one electronic certificate is stored for one mail address. For instance, a URL for guiding the electronic certificate to a selecting image 10 is included in the verified result of the electronic certificate attached to the e-mail to enable a user to easily and surely select the electronic certificate. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a receiver of an encrypted mail transmitted with designated Bcc from being specified by other receivers. SOLUTION: The encrypted mail client includes a means for encrypting an e-mail M to form an encrypted mail N and transmitting the encrypted mail N to designated addresses. When a nondisclosure address (Bcc) the address information of which is not disclosed to the other receivers is contained in the addresses, an encrypted mail N1 is formed by removing the nondisclosure address from the addresses. An encrypted mail N2 to the nondisclosure address is separately formed. The encrypted mail N1 without the nondisclosure address is transmitted to the other receivers, and the encrypted mail N2 to the nondisclosure address is transmitted to the nondisclosure address. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology allowing a transmission/reception client to use an electronic mail encryption system at ease even if a transmission/reception error occurs between a gateway device and a mail transmission/reception server, in the gateway device encrypting and decrypting an electronic mail. SOLUTION: When the transmission error occurs when an S/MIME gateway 2 transmits an encryption mail to an SMTP server 3, the S/MIME gateway 2 creates an error mail, and a client device 1 can receive the error mail. When the S/MIME gateway 2 can receive at least one encryption mail, even if the reception error occurs when receiving the encryption mail from a POP3 server 4, the S/MIME gateway 2 decrypts the encryption mail, and the client device 1 can receive a plaintext mail. Then, the transmission/reception client can use the electronic mail encryption system at ease. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
