Abstract:
A reamer (58) for reaming a proximal portion (62) of a cavity (10) for use in implanting a joint prosthesis (62) cooperates with a proximal portion of an orthopaedic implant component. The reamer includes a body (66) defining a cavity (68) formed therein for receiving at least a portion of the orthopaedic implant component. The reamer also includes a plurality of cutting edges (70) extending outwardly from the body. The edges are adapted for cooperation with bone. The reamer also includes a stem (72) extending from an end of the body.
Abstract:
A medical implant system is described for inhibiting infection associated with a joint prosthesis implant. An inventive system includes an implant body made of a biocompatible material which has a metal component disposed on an external surface of the implant body. A current is allowed to flow to the metal component, stimulating release of metal ions toxic to microbes, such as bacteria, protozoa, fungi, and viruses. One detailed system is completely surgically implantable in the patient such that no part of the system is external to the patient while the system is in use. In addition, externally controlled devices are provided which allow for modulation of implanted components.
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an implant having improved surface characteristics and excellent biocompatibility, and a method of manufacturing the implant.SOLUTION: The implant includes attaching means 9.12 to be attached to the living body tissue of a human or an animal. The implant has an outer surface including a first part and a second part having different characteristics in biocompatibility with the living tissue, and has at least one surface part 20 including a polished surface 21 constituting the first part and one or more sectioned regions 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31 constituting the second part. A masking unit for a method of manufacturing the implant, in which a perforated masking unit is applied to the implant, is also provided.
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an implantable orthopaedic knee prosthesis.SOLUTION: The implantable orthopaedic knee prosthesis includes a femoral component that is configured to be coupled to a surgically-prepared distal femur. The femoral component has an articular side that includes a posterior femoral condyle surface. A fixation side is opposite the articular side, and it includes a posterior fixation surface that extends generally in the superior/inferior direction. The posterior fixation surface has an angled posterior cement pocket formed therein.
