The image forming apparatus changes a relative speed between the intermediate transfer belt 8 and the secondary transfer belt 21, forms multiple calibration patterns consisted of toner images, on the intermediate transfer belt 8 at respective multiple different relative speeds, transfers the multiple calibration patterns on a sheet, and controls the speeds of the intermediate transfer belt 8 and the secondary transfer belt 21 so that the relative speed therebetween is a speed that formed an optimal calibration pattern among the multiple calibration patterns.
