PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple method for easily obtaining in high yield an N,N,N-trimethyladamantaneammonium salt.SOLUTION: A method comprises: reacting a 1-halogenated adamantane and dimethylamine with each other in the presence of iodine as catalyst to obtain N,N-dimethyl-1-aminoadamantane followed by reacting the N,N-dimethyl-1-aminoadamantane and dimethyl carbonate with each other.

Waterproofing compositions for wood preservative systems are provided comprising compounds of the formula wherein X is hydrogen or Y is substituted or unsubstituted -CH2-(CHOH-CH2-O-)w, substituted or unsubstituted or an enantiomer thereof, or substituted or unsubstituted or an enantiomer thereof; R , R and R independently are a saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, interrupted or uninterrupted C9-C50 group, w is an integer from 1 to 10 and x and y independently are 0, 1 or 2. The composition optionally contains a biocidal effective amount of at least one C1-C20alkyl- or aryl-substituted alkyl, C8-C20alkyl quaternary ammonium composition, a solvent or a combination thereof.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially advantageous method for producing a quaternary ammonium halide having high quality quaternary ammonium salt containing little amount of amine salts and expressing little discoloration as that obtained by a conventional method. SOLUTION: The method for producing quaternary ammonium halide expressed by formula (1): Q + X - (1) (wherein Q + expresses a quaternary ammonium cation; X - expresses a halogen anion) is to react a tertiary amine with an alkyl halide in the presence of a basic alkaline earth metal compound.
