The set stability of keratin fibers, particularly wool fibers, is improved by polymerizing a halogen-containing vinyl or acrylic compound in the fibers and thereafter reacting the deposited polymer with a thiosulfate. Polymerization of the vinyl or acrylic compound can be readily effected in the presence of persulfuric acid and a tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium salt.

The present invention relates to a process for rendering keratinous material, particularly wool, resistant to shrinkage and for imparting durable press characteristics to the material. The products used therefor are polythiol compounds containing in the molecule (a) a radical of a polyhydric alcohol, (b) poly(oxyalkylene) chains, and (c) radicals of mercapto-ethers or mercapto-esters.

A dye beam of adjustable width comprises a hollow shaft having perforations in its centre portion to permit the passage of treatment liquor, two endplates on the shaft, one or both of which may be movable, and a telescopic outer framework cooperating with the endplates for supporting a textile fabric, the width of the outer framework being adjustable by movement of the endplates. The framework is preferably made up of overlapping groups of circumferentially spaced perforated U-section elements mounted on the hollow shaft and movable relative to one another with the endplates in the general axial direction of the shaft.

Semi-artificial pile fabrics, having a fibrous pile of high density and with the fibres orientated as in natural pelts, are produced by first bonding the tips of the pile fibres of a woolled, furred or haired animal pelt to a temporary backing, leaving the remainder of the pile unbonded, cutting the pile from the skin, and bonding the cut ends of the pile fibres to a permanent backing, whereafter the temporary backing is removed. The temporary backing is preferably attached to the tips of the fibres by a relatively weak bond, so that it can be removed from the finished pile fabric by simply stripping off. If the pile is cut at a location between the temporary backing and the hide of the pelt, two pile materials are simultaneously produced, one comprising the pile on the temporary backing ready for transfer to a permanent backing and the other comprising the residual pile on the original hide.
