A removable data storage medium for a computer or other data processing device contains at least two data storage disks, a master disk and a backup disk, housed in a single cartridge. All data stored on the device is written to both the master and backup disk. Consequently, the data storage is more reliable because two copies of the data are maintained. The second copy of the data can be used to correct errors or corruption occurring in the first copy, and vice versa.

An information storage device (10, 510, 610, 710, 810) includes a cradle (12, 512, 612, 712, 812) which can removably receive a cartridge (11, 411, 511, 611, 711) that contains a rotatable hard disk (91, 326-327). A read/write head (107, 331-334) is supported for movement adjacent the disk by a pivotal actuator arm (101). The cradle controls alignment of the head with the disk using feedback servo tracking. Calibration parameters used to perform this tracking, such as servo information or read channel information, may be stored in a special track (414) which is on the disk, and which may be a read-only track. The special track stores a plurality of sets of calibration parameters, each corresponding to a respective combination of a cradle and an environmental characteristic such as temperature. The special track may also be used to store the number of times that the cartridge has been inserted into each of several different cradles, as well as a selected retry method which is more likely than other methods to be successful in recovering data that was subject to errors.

A system and method for automatically executing a participating application upon insertion of a removable media into a computing device. When the computing device detects that the removable media containing has been inserted, a task disk control file is read from the removable media. The task disk control file contains all of the configuration information necessary to run the participating application from the removable media The participating application is then launched for use by a user. After the user is finished using the participating application, the removable disk is automatically ejected. In addition to monitoring for insertion of the removable media, events such as a completion of the self-contained application and a request to eject the media are monitored. When a completion event is encountered, all data files are saved, temporary files deleted and configuration information removed prior to the removable disk ejection. When an ejection event is encountered, the computing device is instructed to wait until the completion events are executed prior to actual ejection of the removable media.

A system an method for distribution of electronic data over a network infrastructure that includes a client device for operation by a user desiring to receive the electronic data and server that contains the electronic data and offering the electronic data for downloading to the client device via the network infrastructure. The client device communicates a compound data key that includes a unique serial number associated with a particular piece of media to which the electronic data is to be stored to the server, vendor information and user information. The server encrypts the electronic data using the compound key, and downloads the encrypted electronic data to the client computer, where the client computer writes the encrypted electronic data to the particular piece of media such that the encrypted electronic data may only be accessed from the particular piece of media. The electronic data is decrypted for use by the apparatus or another device attached to the apparatus using the compound key as a data key, and the data is accessible from only the one piece of media having the unique serial number and is not accessible from any other media having a different or no identifier. In an alternate embodiment, the apparatus for reading the encrypted electronic data is connected to a general purpose computer having a media drive which reads the unique serial number and the electronic data from the one piece of media. The apparatus comprises an application specific integrated circuit which controls and executes instructions to accept the electronic data and the unique serial number from the general purpose computer.

A labyrinth seal arrangement for preventing contaminants from entering an interior of the removable cartridge. The labyrinth seal includes a sealing disk disposed external to the cartridge housing proximate the hub opening that acts to pump air away from the hub opening to prevent a flow of air and airborne contaminants, including dust, dirt, smoke, and the like, from being introduced into the removable cartridge through the area around the hub opening during operation of the cartridge. The sealing disk can be part of the removable cartridge or the disk drive. The cartridge can include a clamping mechanism for selectively moving the sealing disk between a static contact position over the hub opening during a non-operating condition and a dynamic spaced apart relation with the cartridge housing during an operating condition. The sealing disk can have substantially the same dimensions as the data storage disk or can have pumping features either of which is designed to create an air flow that negates the air flow created by the spinning data storage disk(s). The sealing disk functions to produce substantially no net air flow into or out of the cartridge housing around the hub during operation. Zero net air flow results in no contaminant introduction. By controlling the introduction of contaminants into the interior of the cartridge, the life and performance of the disk cartridge can be improved by allowing an increased track density and linear density. The sealing disk also improves the capacity of the disk cartridge by providing a more reliable surface on the bottom surface of the disk proximate the hub opening, which is typically the least reliable recording surface of the data storage media.

The first head and the second head are substantially parallel to each other and disposed at a static roll angle nulla and a static roll angle nullb, respectively, from the flexible medium to impart a curvature to the flexible medium of a disk. The curvature reduces out-of-plane vibrations of the flexible medium and thereby enhances the electrical communicative signal between the flexible medium and the first and the second heads.
