An integrated circuit radio transceiver and method therefor is operable to flexibly and efficiently de-interleave a received communication signal by initially changing a received signal from the time domain to the frequency domain to generate a plurality of tones that are then rearranged in a first de-interleaving step to an order expected by a downstream decoder. Thereafter, the tones are detected to generate a soft bit sequence and are then reverse-swizzled and de-interleaved. The de-interleaving step is performed in a manner that compensates for row/column offset interleaving performed by a transmitter that transmitted the received signal being processed.

In an embodiment, a reconfigurable soft-output bit demapping system includes a mode/modulation independent equalizer, a plurality of mode/modulation independent soft-slicers coupled to the outputs of the equalizer, a plurality of mode/modulation independent post-scalers coupled to the outputs of the soft-slicers, and a mode-dependent coefficient calculator. The coefficient calculator generates parameters for configuring the equalizer, the soft-slicers, and the post-scalers according to the used mode of operation and modulation scheme.

A method and apparatus are provided for selecting a transmission mode based upon a length of at least a portion of a packet to be transmitted. A packet is transmitted in a multiple antenna communication system by selecting a transmission mode based on a length of at least a portion of the packet. The transmission mode can indicate a number of antennas or date rate (or both) to be used for the transmission. A transmission mode can also be selected based on, for example, (i) a mode selection table that records an expected transmission time for a packet for each supported transmission mode or (ii) one or more packet length thresholds each having a corresponding transmission mode. ACK (acknowledgment) packets can be transmitted using a predefined transmission mode, such as a SISO mode (or a lower order MIMO mode than the original packet), or based on a predefined relationship between the transmission mode of the original packet and the corresponding transmission mode that should be used to acknowledge the packet.

A system transformation is obtained by selecting a weighting matrix that when linearly transforming a channel utilized for wireless communication, results in a particular transformed triangular matrix. The weighting matrix is then used to provide a transformed vector for a received signal that allows a search in one constellation. In searching the constellation recursion values are used to calculate the Euclidean distances between set points of the constellation and the location on the constellation corresponding to the received signal for both bit values 0 and 1. Minimum Euclidean distances are determined for bit values 0 and 1 and the difference of the minimum Euclidean distances is used to compute the maximum likelihood value for bits contained in the received signal.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for transmitting symbols in a multiple antenna communication system. The disclosed frame structure comprises a preamble having a plurality of long training symbols that are transmitted on a plurality transmit antennas. At least a portion of the frame is delayed on at least one transmit antenna. The disclosed frame formats of the present invention are backwards compatible to existing single antenna communication systems. The delay amount, D, can be approximately equal to one OFDM time sample period, T. The delayed version can be obtained by introducing a time delay into a signal on the delayed branch(es) or by cyclically shifting at least a portion of each frame on the delayed branch(es). The entire frame or only the preamble portion of each frame can be delayed.

Methods and systems for calibrating a transmitter with I/Q imbalance and local oscillator feed-through include generating a test tone, frequency up-converting the test tone, monitoring one or more features of the up-converted test tone, and adjusting one or more features of the transmitter in response to the monitoring. The monitoring optionally includes monitoring a beating of the envelope of the up-converted test tone. In an embodiment, a first harmonic of the up-converted test tone is monitored for local oscillator feed-through (LOFT). Alternatively, baseband data inputs to the transmitter are disabled, and LOFT is measured by measuring power at the transmitter output. A second harmonic of the up-converted test tone is monitored for gain and phase imbalances. The adjusting optionally includes adjusting a gain imbalance, adjusting a phase imbalance, and/or adjusting a DC offset. The adjusting optionally includes an iterative refinement process.
