A water-based ink for ink-jet recording enables the expression of sharp text and lines in high density black, and the formation of a high quality gradation image in which the graininess is reduced in a black image of medium to high lightness. The inks include a color ink (A) and a color ink (B) each of which independently has a lightness index L* according to the L* a* b* calorimetric system of about 60 or less. The color ink (A) and the color ink (B) satisfy the following expression (I): about 120°≦|α−β| about ≦240° (I) wherein α is the hue angle of the color ink (A) and β is the hue angle of the color ink (B). The chroma C* of a hue obtained by the combination of the color ink (A) and the color ink (B) is about 30 or less.

The ink for ink-jet recording contains a self-dispersing type microparticulate coloring agent, a surfactant, and water. When the surface tension is plotted in the vertical axis, and the concentration of the surfactant is plotted in the horizontal axis, then the correlation between the surface tension and the concentration of the surfactant can be represented by a correlation curve which has one inflection point and which has two local maximum points of curvature on both sides of the inflection point one by one. Further, the ink for ink-jet recording contains the surfactant at a concentration which is higher than a concentration corresponding to the local maximum point of the curvature on the low concentration side.

The ink is solidified into a solid matter when the water is evaporated. Further, the solid matter is redissolved in the unsolidified water base pigment ink for ink-jet recording. When the ink is used, then neither clog-up of a nozzle nor discharge failure is caused, no load is imposed by the solidified ink on the maintenance system such as the wiping equipment, and the sticking performance on the paper is satisfactory.

A water base ink for ink-jet recording to be used for an ink-jet recording apparatus having an ink-jet head comprises a self-dispersing type coloring agent, water, and a water-soluble organic solvent. The surface tension of the ink is 30 to 50 mN/M, the advancing contact angle with respect to the jetting surface of the ink-jet head is not less than 65°, the receding contact angle is not less than 55°, and the difference between the advancing contact angle and the receding contact angle is not more than 20°. It is possible to jet the ink stably, it is possible to form a sharp recorded image with less blur, and it is possible to obtain the recorded image excellent in water resistance.
