A method of operating a navigation system includes obtaining a destination location and identifying a parking facility proximate said destination location. The method further includes providing historic parking availability information for the identified parking facility. The historic parking availability information is based on past parking availability at the identified parking facility. The method may also calculate a route from an origin to the parking facility and provide guidance for following the route. Additionally, the method obtains a reservation for parking at the parking facility.

A text description of the pedestrian segment is collected. The text description includes one of a predetermined number of phrases and a name of at least one feature visible from a location of the pedestrian segment. Data representing the pedestrian segment is stored in the geographic database.

A method of obtaining data for a geographic database for use with a navigation system includes collecting data indicating parking availability at a parking facility at a plurality of times and analyzing the data indicating parking availability. Based on the analyzing, the method derives historic parking data for the parking facility. The historic parking data indicates past parking availability at the parking facility at predetermined times. The historic parking data is stored in the geographic database. The historic parking data may indicate past parking availability for predetermined time intervals, days of the week, weather conditions and events.

A system and method are disclosed for displaying map information on a computing device. Data are stored for rendering a simulation of travel along one or more road segments prior to embarking on travel along the road segments. The simulation is comprised of a sequence of views of the road network along each road segment from vantage points above or along the road network. Each road segment may be part of a calculated route and the simulation may include views for all the road segments contained in the calculated route. While the computing device is being conveyed along each road segment, the data stored for the simulation is used to show a view of the road network that includes the current position of the computing device on a display of the computing device.

A method for operating a navigation system is disclosed. An ordered plurality of interconnected segments providing a route from an origin to a destination is obtained. A guidance message for each of the segments is formed. The step of forming the guidance message comprises determining whether to reference a previous segment and adding a reference to a current segment.

The unorganized geographic area lacks underlying organization into roads and paths. Data indicating a location of the virtual pedestrian segment is collected. Data representing the virtual pedestrian segment is stored in the geographic database, and the geographic database is provided for use with navigation related features.
