    Abstract: A steering wheel mounted on a hub. The steering wheel is molded of a high impact grade nylon and comprises an integral rim, spokes and a thin wall energy absorbing sleeve. The rim is disposed in coaxial relationship to and axially spaced from the hub.The energy absorbing sleeve when viewed in plan view has a substantially rectangular configuration of decreasing size from its upper end downwardly toward the hub. The walls of the sleeve have a generally ogival configuration from top to bottom. The construction and arrangement is such that the energy absorbing sleeve produces a large amount of crush at relatively constant load for obtaining a high degree of energy absorption.

    Abstract: A steering wheel assembly having an energy absorbing sleeve 13 supported on a hub 12 and a steering wheel 14 supported on the sleeve. The energy absorbing sleeve has a plurality of concentric, substantially rectangular rings 19 formed in stepped relationship to provide essentially crush force throughout its range of usable crush.The steering wheel 14 comprises an armature 15 forming a housing 22 for the energy absorbing sleeve, the upper end of the housing being complementary to the rectangular configuration of the sleeve. The armature further has an annular rim core 24 and a plurality of spokes 25 extending from the housing to the rim core. The housing 22, the spokes 25 and the rim core 24 are integrally molded of plastic, preferably a polycarbonate selected for its impact strength over a wide temperature range.

    Abstract: a run-flat system comprising, in combination, a vehicle wheel having a tubeless tire mounted thereon and a run-flat support structure within the tire comprising a plurality of arcuate segments interposed between the rim of the wheel and the tread section of the tire. The segments are fastened to the rim and in normal inflated condition of the tire are radially spaced from the tire tread section. The improvement comprises each arcuate segment having an elongated hollow base section seated in the drop center channel of the wheel rim, side walls extending outwardly from the base wall toward the tubeless tire retention beads, and a compression resistant wall spanning the segment base section side walls. An energy absorbent elastomeric arcuate liner externally covers the upper section of the segment base section, the liner extending over the side edges of the segment base section in abutting relation to the retention beads to compress the latter against the retention flanges of the rim.
